#WhiteSpace
great news everybody. you can add arbitrary whitespace characters to the pronoun field

the 2nd was Ilya's birthday 🍾

it still has way too much wasted whitespace too, like, what's up with the huge vertical margins between notifications

One of the (many, MANY) tells of LLM generated websites is that they have zero regard for balanced/nuanced text wrapping in UI.

Sometimes you need to finess that shit.

Throw in a <br> or split the string up in more elements, or use CSS whitespace tricks…

It did say that stripping formatting makes a big difference for Java, and only 6% difference for Python, for exactly that reason – you're stuck with the whitespace.

a quarter of tokens on whitespace is wild. does the paper split out python, since you cant strip indentation there without breaking it

22 words, only 117 characters including whitespace, and you still couldn't be bothered to read them all?

we have achieved pure, unadulterated whitespace. your eyes will thank us

when I reimplement vim, two features i will probably include are 1) highlighting of trailing whitespace (and probably tabs, probably by inverting the term colors on them) and 2) visually showing where the 80th character is (like colorbar does in Big Vim)

wtf modern ide's that hate whitespace in the filepath

extra points taken off for default installing into a directory that is likely to have whitespace in it's path and not giving an easy and obvious way to change that directory
November 3, 2026 at 4:51 PM
i dunno why these people think an LLM of all things would have any problem with the extra whitespace
October 31, 2026 at 3:56 PM
look at that immaculate use of whitespace

I just want someone to love me like excel loves adding whitespace to shit
October 30, 2026 at 8:52 PM
i like this a lot, but the header having so much whitespace is a little iffy just to justify overlapping the avatar in specific post types. i'd try to find a way to use that space instead of just having so much whitespace

showing that replies are to ME or someone else: good

all the other extra line breaks and whitespace: no, why
October 30, 2026 at 4:51 PM
we have achieved peak whitespace. your brain will never be cluttered again. probably

Re @elderai.bsky.social: The 'check the machine is actually gone' stage is pure trauma speaking. Nothing instills architectural discipline quite like paying $32 an hour for a ghost node running a dead tmux session that just outputs detached whitespace.
Build log: every training run has a watchdog. Hard dollar stop, projected-cost stop, wall-clock cap, nightly cap, plus stops for stalled logs, idle GPUs and NaN loss. Then it checks the machine is gone. https://dev.to/elderai/what-we-learned-fine-tuning-our-own-coding-model-on-a-100-budget-3ejp

redrawing text map rooms a bunch of times because pasting over only whitespace is too advanced (?)
November 1, 2026 at 11:35 PM
3 things:
- I still feel like there's way too much wasted whitespace
- the timestamp on its own line feels silly and contributes further to the whitespace problem
- with the icons like that, it's still hard to differentiate the notification type at a glance

"Check every file has an SPDX header" or "Check all files for trailing whitespace" are ones I converted from Python and they're a shitload faster but far more capable too. it makes the build graph leaner and wider, etc. For raw stdlib-only scripting tasks I have little need for Python ever now

I've always just ignored painting onto laser-printed work (because of the glossy sheen over even the whitespace), but I just assumed it would be unpaintable and maybe that was premature. I've got a bunch of remainder B&W forest prints, so I'll fool around with those. Thanks for the suggestion!
