Former Why Don’t We member Jack Avery has publicly responded after his former partner, social media influencer Gabbie Gonzalez, was charged in California in connection with an alleged murder-for-hire conspiracy targeting him. Prosecutors also charged Gonzalez’s father, Francisco Gonzalez, and surf instructor Kai Cordrey with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and solicitation to commit murder. According to investigators, the alleged plot emerged during a prolonged custody dispute involving Avery and Gonzalez over their daughter, Lavender. Court documents reportedly claim that Francisco Gonzalez became heavily involved in the legal battle and sought ways to discredit or remove Avery from the family situation. Witnesses told investigators that he made hostile remarks suggesting it would be less expensive if Avery were dead. Authorities allege that Gabbie Gonzalez portrayed Avery as an unsafe parent during custody proceedings and discussed having him killed. Prosecutors further claim that Gonzalez and Cordrey explored using the dark web and Bitcoin to hire a hitman and considered staging Avery’s death to resemble a car accident. In a social media statement, Avery said that he and his family had endured years of public scrutiny and false accusations but that he had stayed silent to protect his daughter and respect the legal process. He added that his main priority is being the best father possible and confirmed that he currently has sole custody of Lavender. Avery also thanked law enforcement officials, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, friends and supporters for their assistance.
