When time for Odin’s next lesson came, Freya wasn’t dreading it, because she had entirely forgotten, obsessed with reputation she should have. Would she rather be overestimated or underestimated? Smile warmly or have her teeth sharpened, even if the visual alone made them itch? She could bestow love on people as reward or curse them with it – she idly wondered whether jarl Bolesław and his dog found their happily-ever-after. Should those people (except jarl Bolesław) know about her power? “Oh,” she welcomed the frowning All-Father, “it’s you. Howdy?” The wrinkles between Odin’s eye and black hole deepened. “I would like to fly.” “So, feeling good?” “Tone,” he snapped. “I can shift. I can’t fly. Something goes wonky. Teach me, you’re a very good eagle.” “A falcon,” Freya muttered. Wrinkles between her eyes were gorgeous, if involuntary. It was another of those things she couldn’t explain. She just did it. What was flight? Walking, in general, involved having something under one’s feet. Wingless creatures only ever suddenly found themselves not having anything under their feet when they were either very distracted, or in the process of falling into a trap.

Freyr’s ballooning trousers suggested that he was very, very excited about the proceedings. Oddly, his face suggested he was in considerable pain. As Odin examined Freyr and his extremely obvious single entendre, Vé didn’t say a few more sentences before finally continuing aloud. “He knows everything about pleasures of the body and mind. There have been many dances and feasts and org…anised events for him all over Vanaheim. He will be dearly missed by the Vanir people and never forgotten.” “So you’re giving me a family,” said Odin. “Where’s their mother?” Njordr, who was busy animatedly chatting with Nerthus – whom he’d never see again – about various techniques of drowning fishermen, coughed. “My sister is, uh, dead.” “Your sister,” said Odin flatly. Come to think of it, Freya and Freyr looked very much alike. Their names sounded alike, too. And she was now whispering something to him as he adjusted his single entendre in the loose, except in one spot, trousers. He was exchanging Mímir for a pair of siblings fathered and mothered by a pair of siblings? Yes, a part of why sending Mímir where Heimdall would never see him again was punishment for the Sentinel, but Odin was also punishing himself, unable to get over having feelings overnight. This was also why Mímir had to go. Fondness was a weakness. He was feeling very weak right now.

It took a few shifts back and forth, and a Guinnessúr or five, to convince Thor that the unnervingly alluring hag was Freya. Making him understand and memorise her plan was harder. “I am your mother,” she repeated. “But that’s not true.” “It is as far as the fortune-teller is concerned,” Freya groaned. Apparently lying required intelligence. “Say nothing. Just sit there with the sad puppy face. Silently. I will explain that I am very concerned about the fate of my poor, lonely son…” “You have a son?” “Argh! This is why I will do all the talking, pumpkin. *You* are my son. As far as the fortune-teller is concerned!” she added hastily before Thor had a chance to protest. “Where was I? Ah. I am scared that you will never meet a woman willing to marry you.” “Oh,” said Thor. “Really?” “As far as the… please start training being silent.”

With a scowl and a heavy heart Thor, officially too heavy to walk the bridge-that-wasn’t-a-bridge and unofficially too simple-minded to understand how it was possible to exist even briefly in two worlds at once, placed himself in his chariot. Freya watched the two cranky goats pull the chariot, which looked a lot like a wooden cart with iron-reinforced sides, more or less upwards and sighed to herself. The only worse choice of animals to pull a chariot would be cats, as one would pretend to fall asleep and the other pick any direction except the one required. Although, come to think of it, earthworms might be even worse than cats, unless they were enormous and – Freya’s visual imagination made her drop the subject. In passing, the crone waved at Heimdall. She didn’t speak to herself while transforming her face and outfit into something crone-worthy, therefore her appearance was news to the mighty Sentinel, sending him into frozen shock. Not just because he had no memory of someone like that entering Ásgard – he should have paid more attention to Ásgard, perhaps, and less to humans inventing theatre. It was worse. The immaculately repulsive crone awakened inside him feelings that, until now, he only ever associated with red beards.

Loki, who in the meantime slowly became someone entirely genderless, positively radiated excitement of decent and indecent sorts. “Sleep? You mean a night of sleep, right?” “Maybe afterwards.” Freya bit her lip. There was no point in asking for further clarification. “Ah! I nearly forgot. That will be a night each.” “What?!” “Four artisans, four nights,” Loki said. “What the f-f-f…” “Each of the f-f-four of them possesses an ability others don’t. They are a complete set. They live and breathe their work. I told them that what you wanted was the ultimate in jewellery. Something worth a bloodbath, nay, something that would be a prize worth destroying the Nine Worlds. They insist they can create it and I, personally, believe them. Of course, I understand you will never agree to their shameless demands…” Loki looked so innocent and pure now that they were practically a flashing neon sign surrounded by a gaggle of prudish can-can dancers announcing “THIS WAS MY OWN, PERSONAL IDEA. I CAME UP WITH IT ALL BY MYSELF. AND I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I KNOW YOU WILL SAY YES.” He was right.

“How was it?” Loki asked as they walked under Yggdrasil, heading back for Ásgard. Freya said nothing. There was no way to explain the symphony of gold and fire, the way she poured every drop of love into them and through the Artisans’ gentle fingers it flowed it into Brísingamen. “Did you, you know? You did, didn’t you? You totally did! Were they good? Wow, I’m jealous. You know, I got to take a look at them and I would, too!” Loki smacked his lips. “Talk about hanky-panky. Or was it more canoodling? Doing the squelchy? How would you rate them, from one to ten? No, wait, which one was the best and which was the worst? Did you get any sleep at all? You don’t look tired, you look…” Loki stopped working on his new invention, slut-shaming, briefly shifting into a field mouse. Freya’s fist missed his jaw and the Goddess nearly fell into the rotting leaves and weird little mushrooms that grew under the Tree. “…radiant,” Loki continued, back to his person form, as if nothing happened. “I like your necklace. Purdy.” Purdy. He was going to be the first of many, Freya realised, to vulgarly reduce the act of creation of Brísingamen to ‘she let four dirty dwarves bugger her for four nights and got a purdy necklace for that.’ Hanky-panky. Even if words capable of crudely sketching the absolute union between then existed, nobody would listen. How would you rate them, from one to ten? The way Loki talked made her feel like there was something shameful about the immense beauty of the time they’d spent together. Something…cheap. Freya knew he’d bring her back to reality. She didn’t expect reality to spit in her face, though.

Heimdall was handsome, although now that she had a chance to really think about it, his plain perfection had nothing on ginger men with hairy elbows… oh, she missed Ginger, Sif sighed. It wasn’t entirely true – she didn’t miss Ginger, she missed the idea of Ginger being around. Especially since Freya clearly hated cats. Sif’s lips formed an ‘o’ shape. Freya clearly hated cats. Wouldn’t it be hilarious to spread rumours about the cats being Freya’s holy animals she was always surrounded with? Instead of Thor’s chariot, pulled by goats, Freya’s would of course be pulled by cats… The steely smirk returned. Cats, the only animals you could count on to never listen to commands. One would fall asleep and the other only ever run in the middle of the night, breaking expensive objects. This would practically be a kindness. Everyone thought of Freya – well, most everyone – well, mostly men – well, mostly men who had no partners and lived in their mothers’ basements, wishing social media existed – anyway, there were people who thought of Freya as little but a strumpet who let four dirty dwarves do unspeakable things to her in exchange for some cheap necklace. Thanks to The Immortal Goddess Sif, they would now speak of her cat-like movements, cat-like beauty and elegance, cat-powered chariot. Every temple of Freya would be adorned with sculptures of cats.

The woman Freya pointed at needed help, clearly barely able to stand. What interested Freya was only a specific part of the woman, or rather what shone on it. “What is this?” “It’s – Your Grace – oh – it’s my – oh – my wedding ring – please take it.” “Are you sure? I, eh, um… remember I love you more than life itself,” Freya lied professionally, “I wouldn’t want to deprive you of… well, since you insist,” she quickly added when the woman’s face dropped, “I will be honoured. Thank you. Now, why don’t you sit down?” she suggested before all of Jötunheim ceased to exist for a few paragraphs. Freya was aware of ‘jewellery’. She saw men and women, from her own maids to Queen Taylor, with objects hanging off their bodies, stuck in various presentable orifices, or making it difficult for them to move their hands. Mortals wore what seemed to have arrived straight from smiths’ junk piles, which they wrapped around their biceps, wrists, ankles, fingers. There was, of course, Odin’s tiara, which couldn’t be described with words. Those things were supposed to be somehow decorative. Freya knew ‘decorative’ – she had her crystals, silverware, Heimdall, statues depicting attractive, mostly naked people (Freyr’s favourites, both the people and the statues they got turned into). Queen Taylor’s finger was – what was the opposite of ‘adorned’? well, that – with a piece of bronze that Freya believed was useful when hitting people in the jaw. If that item could see this ring, it would fall into bottomless depression. Slowly, Freya slipped the ring on her finger and…admired it. It enhanced. Not weighed, distorted, or bound. A red stone, cut in a way that gave it multiple reflective surfaces that caught sun despite the dark clouds, sat comfortably in… Gold.

The word seemed to transform her from the sixth daughter of a drunken carpenter and a shepherdess into someone who could shake off Freya’s words and find a stem of furious envy. Someone who knew that her hair was the only thing that truly made her different from a somewhat cunning tavern wench. “Yeeeees,” she said, letting the word flow like a monotonous skald’s song, not letting it end until the last of the air in her lungs built to a hiss. “Oh, yessss. Very much sssso.” “I will lend you anything you like. Everything, if you so wish, although I don’t think even Thor could lift that all at once! Let me look at your eyes… hmm. Well. I suppose anything will go with this colour. I see you in a long white gown, nothing but a diamond tiara in your hair, nobody will see your ears anyway, but, honey, necklaces, necklaces, necklaces…! Shorter, longer, you will be covered in gold. Bracelets, too. Rings… yes, I am thinking diamonds, darling. Gold and diamonds all over. Would you like that?” Sif nodded carefully. She didn’t know what either a tiara or a diamond was, but being covered in Freya’s gold… Everyone knew the Goddess desired nothing but gold and got what she desired. Sif glanced at the necklace that was worth of four nights with dirty dwarves – nothing much to look at. The rest of her collection must have been astounding. Soon Sif’s collection would rival Freya’s, obviously…

The least offensive answer she could come up with was ‘blank space’. “It’s blank space,” the Queen said with a note of pity in her voice. “For me to fill. There won’t always be sixty-seven adults and eight pups in here, you know? This space can accommodate dwellings, inns, a swimming pool, room for a pony. The woods? Planks, firewood, clearing land for cattle. The point is that as long as it’s mine, nobody else can have it. I can decree that those trees can’t be touched as long as I live, then laugh at children begging me for one branch to warm the lairs they dug with their little hands.”

If you got murdered, would you just shake it off?” Freya had to admit she’d never really thought about it. “I’m also securing my children’s future. This way not just I shall go to Valhalla and live forever in skalds’ songs, but so will my children. This is as immortal as we mortals get. Oh, I can’t wait to see my children being avenged by my grandchildren, Odin by their side…” “I need some water,” Freya said weakly.

As you know best. Please go back to work and I will be with you as soon as possible.” “Oh yeah?” Heimdall bellowed in response. “And that will be an eternity from now, I suppose? I’m not stupid! And it’s all obvious.” “What is obvious is that you need to go back to work right now.” “Make me,” Heimdall shrugged. “Should I go back to protesting or will you listen to me?” “It’s classified intel…” Odin started, then facepalmed. Heimdall heard everything that was said in Ásgard. “Come in. Leave the sign outside, please. It doesn’t say what you think it does anyway.” “I had it custom made,” Heimdall said proudly. “It says ‘I SHALL PREVAIL’.” “It says ‘CHICKEN SOUP WITH NOODLES’,” Odin said. “Fine. Join us and tell us about your obvious answer. To what question?” Heimdall gawked at his sign, threw it on the ground, and climbed in through the window.

You will use all your powers, so will he, and it won’t end until there is only Vé and you, flinging cow dung at each other, as the Nine Worlds burn.” “I’m going to win,” huffed Odin. “I just need a bit more time.” “How funny,” Idunn said, “Vé said exactly the same thing.” “You can’t win this war,” Bragi said, his voice flat, rather than a low purr he used earlier. “Neither of you can. Loki was, on certain cheap level, right. She did agree to ‘pay’ for the necklace with her body, even if she intended to put a sleeping potion in their…gravel, or whatever it was that dwarves ate. Now the union of the four Gods and one Goddess would be reduced to a story to entertain a certain sort of people, and she’d bet her bottom a gold coin that Loki would ensure it would reach as many ears as possible. Probably even Bragi wouldn’t be able to erase it; once a truth was implanted in people’s heads, it tended to remain there, and this story was going to spread like wildfire. There would be red faces, fat bellies shaking in laughter, saliva flying out of men’s mouths as they guffawed at the…bartering. For just a blink, she felt herself shrink, her shoulders sloping under the weight of shame… …that wasn’t there. As long as Brísingamen remained on her neck, there was unity. Togetherness. Oneness. Its existence, its presence soothed her. When her hand touched it, she noticed that at some point she must have lost the ring. “It’s not a necklace,” she said absently as the air of Ásgard mixed with the warm dampness of the eternal late summer underneath the roots of Yggdrasil. “It’s Brísingamen.”

Freya was initially pleased to hear she’d be one of the not-at-all-hostages who would be permanently moving to Ásgard and her twin brother. Her father would be split from her mother, who was his twin sister. This made Freya a bit uncomfortable, especially as she’d pay a monthly subscription to stay away from her brother’s entendre, but the Luminous Overlord made her understand, or so she thought. As Vé explained, everything the Gods did was normal by the virtue of being done by Gods – such as you, he quickly added, which made Freya beam with pleasure. For her, she decided, it would be normal to not have children with her brother. Then Vé told her she was Chosen because she was Very Important and Freya stopped listening. It is I, she thought, THE Very Important Goddess Freya. This would look good on business cards. She had been forced to swear three oaths on Odin’s Staff, oaths that could never be broken, or the entire Universe would… it was hard to say what it 'would', since nobody dared to break such an oath so far. It definitely 'would', though. Freya would never dwell in Vanaheim again, or even visit it. She would teach Odin seidr, even though it was women’s magic. And she would never meddle with Gods’ love lives. Odin’s tone had suggested absolute lack of faith in her good intentions and innocence. ‘You’re not my real Dad’ had died on Freya’s lips when her glare met Odin’s heavy stare and she saw fire burning inside the empty eye socket. She hadn't screamed – that would be sooooo childish. With her face burning as if she were standing too close to the fire, which she had been, Freya had found her toes to be of great interest and stammered something along the lines of ‘thank you Sir, I’m sorry Sir, I mean, Your Grace’. She was not going to break those three oaths. She was already entertaining herself with the images of mildly bullying Frigg by giving her passive-aggressive fashion advice.
