I think appliance review sites should have a separate 'no 'smart' features' vertical because I do feel like there are a growing number of people who don't need a wi-fi enabled dishwasher or a washing machine that requires a subscription or a fridge that can be hacked.

You can judge them once you’ve invented anything as good as a wi-fi enabled stove that is also racist

I propose replacing it with a new metaphor, "you can't put the juice back in the proprietary Juicero wi-fi enabled cold-pressed juice pack"
Why is it that tech and AI boosters keep saying "you can't put the genie back in the bottle" when making arguments about AI's supposed inevitable dominance? Did they not read the story? The genie does, indeed, go back in the bottle. Maybe we should start there.

NEW: Researchers found vulnerabilities in AirPlay that allow an attacker to spread malware if they’re on the same wi-fi network. Apple patched, but potentially hundreds of millions of 3rd party devices remain vulnerable @lhn.bsky.social & @agreenberg.bsky.social report www.wired.com/story/airbor...

Apple products are known for regularly receiving fixes, but given how rarely some smart-home devices are patched, it’s likely that these wirelessly enabled footholds for malware, across many of the hundreds of models of AirPlay-enabled devices, will persist for years to come.

Flaws in Apple's AirPlay protocol for streaming media to speakers, TVs, and set-top boxes have left millions of these devices vulnerable to being hijacked by any hacker on the same Wifi network.

Many of these devices never receive patches.

Now newly uncovered security flaws in AirPlay mean that those same wireless connections could allow hackers to move within a network just as easily, spreading malicious code from one infected device to another.
