Wiki Loves Mingachevir: The Kyrgyz Wikicommunity’s Azerbaijani Adventure
Held in the beautiful city of Mingachevir, Azerbaijan, from August 12-16, the Wiki Loves Mingachevir camp was an unforgettable experience in regional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and building new friendships. We represented the Kyrgyz Wikicommunity with a three-person team at this exciting event. Our participation was made possible thanks to a microgrant provided by the CEE Hub, giving us a fantastic opportunity to strengthen the bonds between our communities. Kyrgyz Wikimedians One of the highlights of the camp was the presentation on the Kyrgyz Wikicommunity, which I co-hosted with User:Ch. We shared our community’s past achievements, current general statistics, and exciting plans for the future. The most beautiful aspect of Wikimedia events is that they offer not just a space for digital knowledge, but also for cultural exchange. To reflect this spirit, we distributed _kurut_ (a traditional Kyrgyz dried cheese) to the participants at the end of our presentation. Tasting the _kurut_ and the conversations it sparked added a very warm and welcoming atmosphere to the room. me 🙂 For me, one of the most unforgettable parts of this camp was the opportunity to finally meet the “giant” editors from az.wikipedia.org, whose contributions I have admired for years. Meeting these hardworking people face-to-face and exchanging ideas broadened my vision immensely. Of course, we also expanded our technical knowledge. The new technical skills we acquired were highly insightful for our future work. Throughout the camp, we received extremely useful technical training on the **WikiProof** tool, **Category Import** processes, and website management for the **Wiki Loves Monuments** project. It was exciting to see how much these tools will speed up the workflow in our local projects. We didn’t just work behind closed doors; the social time we spent together was invaluable. In the evenings, we had a lot of fun and shared many laughs playing card games like Mafia and Uno. The beautiful boat trip we took on the Kura River in Mingachevir was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to relax and bond. After the event, we spent two days exploring the city of Baku. We wandered the streets taking plenty of photos for Wikimedia Commons and made unforgettable memories having a picnic with fellow wiki editors. A massive thank you goes to **User:Aida** and **User:NurAy** for their immense efforts in organizing this fantastic camp. We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to the **Ministry of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan** and **Azersun Holding** , whose hospitality and support as sponsors made this event possible. We look forward to meeting at many more events where regional cooperation and the bonds between Turkic-speaking Wikimedians will grow even stronger! ## Gallery _The Diamond Arm_ , Chyort poberi, Baku * Commons category

How the Ukrainian wikicommunity celebrated Wikipedia’s 25th anniversary
On January 15, 2026, Wikipedia turned 25 — marking a quarter-century as one of the world’s most well-known information resources. Here is a short recap of how the anniversary in the Ukrainian wikicommunity was celebrated. We at Wikimedia Ukraine organized two events for the Ukrainian wikicommunity: * _January 15 — online_ * _January 18 — in person in Kyiv_ ## Virtual celebration The online meeting took place on Thursday, January 15, just right after the international celebration. A total of 22 participants joined this event. Participants introduced themselves by sharing their names, locations, how long they had been editing, and their roles on Wikipedia. They also mentioned members of the wiki community whom they felt grateful to. The program continued with a “True or False” quiz about Wikipedia’s history (both Ukrainian and international), where participants voted in polls and discussed the facts together. For example, they guessed whether it was true that in 2011 the first article contest “French Autumn” took place in the Ukrainian Wikipedia, or that in 2014 a Wikipedia monument was unveiled in the Polish city of Słubice (spoiler — these are true facts :)). Meanwhile, the claim that the first article in the Ukrainian Wikipedia was “Kyiv” is false, since the very first article was titled “Atom.” After a group photo, the meeting moved into a shared reflection and memory exchange. Participants talked about what used to be common on Wikipedia but is no longer, what has remained mostly unchanged for the better, and shared their warmest memories over the years. They also expressed their wishes for Wikipedia’s next 25 years — they wished Wikipedia prosperity, openness, and new active editors, and set a goal to celebrate its 50th anniversary together as well. The celebration finished with an open, informal conversation on various topics. Despite ongoing power outages and missile threat alerts, 14 people from the community gathered in person to mark the anniversary. Attendees introduced themselves and engaged in informal discussions on various Wikimedia-related topics. The group of participants was very diverse — the most prolific editor in the history of the Ukrainian Wikipedia sat next to a new Wikipedian who had recently written her first article, while members of the Board of “Wikimedia Ukraine” sat with educators who had first learned about us at an academic conference in November. _Group photos from the celebration in Kyiv Photos are used with the permission of the author_

WikiArt is a team building for the Ukrainian Wikicommunity
On October 12, 2025, during the Wikiconference in Kyiv, I organized at first a team building for the Wiki community on the topic of “WikiArt”. WikiArt is art through the use of wikiprojects (video, audio and images from Wikimedia Commons, catchphrases, idioms and famous expressions from Wikiquote, interesting facts from Wikiarticles and Wiktionary, etc.). They identified the elements of Wikipedians, guessed cultural monuments in different regions, determined their mood through architectural objects, developed associative thinking using metaphorical cards with images of Olga Haydamaka’s paintings, created their own artistic masterpieces, and performed team-building exercises. The “Wikimood” exercise is 5 images of architectural monuments with certain associations, downloaded from Wikimedia Commons with the license and author of the photo indicated. The first photo shows the “leaning” Tower of Pisa in Pisa (Italy), 2 – the Golden Gate in Kyiv (Ukraine), 3 – the “sad” Taj Mahal (India), 4 – the “ancient” Colosseum in Rome (Italy), 5 – the “romantic” Eiffel Tower in Paris (France). This allows you to determine the emotional mood of the Wikicommunity, recall world architectural monuments, and remind you how to correctly indicate copyright on photos in a presentation. Participants can name their favorite architectural landmark as a form of art and choose their own epithet to describe their mood. The second task is “Recognize the cultural card of Ukraine,” where participants must use the photos to name what type of art, what technique, what exactly is depicted in the photo, and which region of Ukraine it is from. Wikimediagroups was supposed to name the clay product “kumanets” from the pottery capital of Opishna, the Christmas gingerbread “Panyanka” from Kotelva, the carpet (tapestry) “Tree of Life” from Reshetylivka in the Poltava region, the Petrykivka painting from the Dnipropetrovsk region, the Kosiv ceramics from the Carpathians, and the “stone embroidery” on the buildings of the city of Nova Kakhovka in the Kherson region. Reception “Choose your metaphorical card at random” – illustrations of paintings by Ukrainian artist Olga Haydamaka depicting stylized ethnic images with poetic lines by Olga Ptakha. Each member of the Wikimedia community, if desired, described their associations with the chosen metaphorical card and how it resonated with WikiArt. The following exercises are for wiki community team building. Participants are given white A4 paper and markers. Using these materials, it was possible to illustrate Wikipedia or sister projects in a microgroup or individually. For example, Wikipedian from Kharkiv Iryna Buchneva depicted a sunflower flower with the image of the letter “W”, from the petals of which come out pictures illustrating the main wiki projects. Another participant, Viacheslav Mamon, depicted Wikimedia in the form of a tree being sharpened into a certain shape by Wikipedian beavers. Each drawing is a Wikipedian’s perception of WikiProjects through their own associations. Next is the “Wikimosaic” exercise. The digital presentation features a photo of rounded sea stones near a body of water, downloaded from Wikimedia Commons, and above the photo is a quote by Confucius from Wikiquote: “He who moves mountains first removes the small stones.” A kind of paraphrasing and understanding of this quote is that every Wikipedian does not immediately write “good” articles, but first edits small texts – pebble by pebble. The task is to create a kind of Wiki mosaic from the proposed colored pebbles. Each Wikipedian had to interact with each other to create a shared stone mosaic. “Elements of the WikiCommunity” reception: participants discuss the basic elements – fire, earth, air, and water – through images from Wikimedia Commons. Interpretation of this exercise: “With true friends – through fire and water.” Then everyone stands in a circle, where we have to pass a glass of water filled to the top to each other with one hand, and try not to spill it. It’s about the interconnectedness of the Wiki community – from the Wikipedia editor to the reader and vice versa. At the end of the WikiArt team building, participants share their thoughts through an “Open Microphone” session. – Marysia Lebid
