Neither is true. The first isn’t even really possible without community buy-in, and so far the English Wikipedia community has been extremely resistant to AI or AI-assisted editing. As for the latter, all Wikimedia content has always been free, and was already widely used for AI training.

Wikimedia Brasil is now an official Wikimedia chapter, joining 37 others worldwide! 🎉

What began with six volunteers is now a thriving community shaping open knowledge. With chapter status, they will expand partnerships, education, and equity efforts.

Parabéns, Wikimedia Brasil! 🇧🇷💙 ➡️ w.wiki/D4RL

Another chapter in AI biting the hand that feeds it: Wikipedia’s bandwidth surged 50% since January thanks to AI crawlers.

Unlike search engines, they send no traffic back so no new users, no new donors. Just rising costs and a shrinking audience.

A raw deal for a cornerstone of the free web.

There certainly can be reasonable conversations about whether the Wikimedia Foundation needs to spend as much as it does, and the community has these conversations regularly. Most of the conversations I’ve seen from Musk and allies, however, are not such conversations.

Just 13% of their budget is spent on admin and governance - most Wikimedia Foundation Money is spent on things that directly support the websites, from community grants to legal support.

The stat that it could run for 100 years is BS - it takes way more than hosting costs to run Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is part of something bigger.

It is one of many projects supported by the Wikimedia Foundation to help promote free knowledge. These projects are maintained by a global community of volunteers known as Wikimedians.
