"pretty early days" is not even true! Wikipedia & responsible use of it was part of my opening week lectures about plagiarism dating back to 2005. I broke the Chris Benoit story on WikiNews in 2007. It wasn't mentioned in 2013 because it WAS CONSIDERED BEYOND MENTION en.wikinews.org/wiki/Chris_B...
Maybe the tidiest, most economical undercutting of one's own point I've ever seen

Scoop: Wikinews, a sister project to Wikipedia, may shut down forever after parent organization Wikimedia Foundation noted low online traffic and even lower interest from volunteer contributors and editors.
Wikinews, a sister project to Wikipedia, faces imminent closure amid low web traffic
The parent organization of Wikipedia said its sister platform Wikinews doesn't produce enough "well-rounded" news, and most traffic comes from search engine bots.

Quite. My sanity requires it.
We cut the cord over a decade ago and haven't watched a single second of televised news since.
Online Reuters, APNews, BBC, and Wikinews satisfy my mainstream news cravings. Actually talking to people fills in the rest.

I haven’t watched any cable news since the election. Not one single minute. If I want to catch up on the day’s news, I watch the nightly news hour on CBS, NBC, ABC or PBS.
Sure, I miss some of the anchors, but it’s been liberating. I highly recommend it.

I was fortunate to meet Jimbo 20 years ago after I broke this story on Wikinews about Chris Benoit's wikipedia article & a specific edit made to it — I was living in Pinellas at the time & they were still based in St. Pete, so he invited me down & I found him to be...yes, sharp & thoughtful.
For this week's @wired.com Big Interview, I talked to Jimmy Wales on the eve of Wikipedia's 25th birthday. He was sharp and thoughtful about Wikipedia's role in cultivating trust, what the press could do differently, why Elon Musk is the way he is, and why he'll never touch Trump's Wikipedia entry.

On this week’s episode of ‘The Big Interview’ podcast, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales talks about maintaining neutrality in an online ecosystem increasingly hostile to facts.

![Dear all,
Following extended discussions [1] within the Wikimedia movement about the Wikinews long-term sustainability, levels of community activity, and the availability of reliable news coverage on other platforms, the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has approved the closure of Wikinews.
Following this decision, all Wikinews editions will transition to read-only mode one month after this announcement, on 4 May. From that date onward, pages on Wikinews will remain publicly accessible for reading, reference and dump downloading, but editing and new content creation will no longer be possible.
We'll share more details about the technical transition to read-only mode and how we'll preserve existing content in the coming weeks.
We thank all contributors who have participated in Wikinews over the years and helped build a unique experiment in collaborative journalism within the Wikimedia movement. We understand that some of them may be disappointed by this decision. To our regret, the project wasn’t able to fulfil its promise, and many of its functions were eclipsed by the notable news coverage in Wikipedias. We hope the Wikinews editors will continue contributing to the other Wikimedia projects or free knowledge projects.
