From December 1917 through January of 1918, Evansville got over 66 inches of snowfall —25.1 inches in December and 41 inches in January. That January was also the second coldest month in Evansville’s recorded history at an average temp of 19.4 degrees, and the severity of the winter nearly brought a halt to the city. City members dealt with the situation in resilient and creative ways, like digging tunnels to access downtown stores as snow piles of up to eight feet tall surrounded Main Street. #TBT #ThrowbackThursday #IndianaHistory #LocalHistory
