Decent point, but they gave those things out for free. Mailed them to your house without you asking even. Also they failed miserably. My librarian mother and I were later able to use a CueCat and a Win98 laptop to digitize a rural school's library

We were pretty resourceful and had a bunch of IBM clones. Started off with some 386 like the first pic.

Second one was -my- PC. Had a bottom of the barrel Pentium II processor with just enough MHz to play video and FMV. (233 MHz, if y'nasty.)

@darkuncle

🤣

I haven't touched MS Paint since Win98, but now that you mention it, I'm certain I never opened any files with it either.

Managed to compile Allegro 4 on Win98 (emulated via x86Box) for the MS-TRES DOS gamejam. The trick is, use time appropriate GCC/Make versions from DJGPP, not the latest ones. GCC 3.4.6 works!

I like in "The Ring" when she goes on the computer and you can see they're just accessing HTML files on the C:\ drive

I've got one of those for Win98, XP, and 7... would love to do the rebuild for the love of the game, there's a place in Columbus OH where I can source new dead stock components

The higher your specialization in a field, the more likely you are to encounter legacy requirements. People argue about Win10/Win11, but there are particle physicist using CP/M terminals and master weavers running Win98 so their planning software can be launched. Wordstar Heroes.

Ich steh auf die alten, grundehrlichen Win98-Ladebalken. Wenn eine Installation 617:45.28 Stunden dauert, dann ist es halt so. #tweetrecycling

Thinking about rebuilding a Win98 machine just so I can play SimCity2K, Baldur’s Gate, and MechWarrior II.

would need to find a Microsoft Sidewinder too.

I'm honestly kinda hype for all the LLM decomps!
there's the small things like always online/abanadoned games and getting PC versions of Smash Melee (with actual networking!).
but think of the OS side - 64bit Win98 with current era security?
actual aero for win11?
Win7 but they never made Win8....?

Moi je fais du vol de geosurvey pour la prospection minière, mon capteur de champs magnétique et terrestre et une prestation vendu à des explorateurs miniers. Ils sont très sensibles et c’est du vieux matériel. Mon ordi tourne sur win98 😅

Might be better to say the Internet gave us free software, since linux didn't predate the internet.

Plus, the TCP stacks that came with WinNT, Win95, Win98, Win2000, WinME, Win2003, WinXP, Win2006, WinVista, and Win7 (to SP3), the software we PAID for, were all broken (did not do CIDR correctly).

been fighting with an old pentium mainboard to run win98 on and had a major breakthough, turns out the onboard ide is a bit crummy....30 year old hardware? maybe it was a bad mainboard design? who knows.

so now i have a new challenge working out how to work around that.

execute is kind of a "fuck it, throw anything at the wall" sort of themed one but its a v. fun stupid (/affectionate) flavor of macabre
Save 40% on Execute on Steam
Kill everyone in the world with a guillotine… on a cursed Win98 desktop.

Yeah, 86box emulating a 333MHz K6-2 running win98. I boot it into DOS to run DIV Games Studio, and I have Paint Shop Pro 7 installed for era-appropriate image processing tasks

I mean, it is. A lot of its features were offered in Win98 as free updates

I really liked the "Future" tileset from this expansion. It's a shame it's so hard to get to play as far as I know, I had to install a Win98 emulator, but it was well worth it.
