TKMS Atlas UK Wins the Royal Navy's Next Generation Countermeasure — Torpedo Defence for Current and Future Submarines
Winfrith, 17 September 2026 ### Key points * TKMS Atlas UK, the British subsidiary of the Kiel naval group, said on 17 September that the Ministry of Defence has awarded it the Next Generation Countermeasure contract, "a key element" of the Royal Navy's Underwater Defensive Aids Suite programme * The work is a torpedo countermeasure system for "current and future Royal Navy submarine platforms", delivered by spiral development so that it can be upgraded in service * Babcock brings countermeasure launcher technology, platform integration and through-life support, after more than three years of joint research with the company before the award; the programme supports 80 jobs in the United Kingdom * The company does not disclose the value and gives no in-service date; the ministry's April 2024 procurement notice estimated the requirement at about GBP 35 million, running from October 2025 to October 2032 The system that is meant to keep a British nuclear submarine alive against an incoming torpedo will come from the UK arm of a German shipbuilder, under a contract whose price the winner treats as confidential and the buyer estimated in public two years ago. No product is named, and none of the announcements says what the new system replaces. Antoni Mazur, the company's managing director, said the award "reflects our longstanding role as the UK's trusted provider of torpedo countermeasure research and development"; Chris Bamforth, the ministry's head of submarine combat systems, offered congratulations and no detail. The 2024 notice, as trade press reported it, asked for trials and testing, combat-system integration, training analysis and post-design services, and framed the platforms as the current Astute class or the future SSN-AUKUS. **At an estimated GBP 35 million over seven years this is a small contract, and its value to TKMS is the position it buys: the defensive suite of SSN-AUKUS, a class whose combat system Britain shares with Australia and will support for half a century.** Spiral development is the operative phrase. A countermeasure fielded incrementally is never finished, which makes the incumbent very hard to displace and the through-life work, Babcock's share, worth more than the development. It also shows how far the sovereignty test in the British underwater enterprise has been relaxed in practice: what counts is a UK legal entity with UK-cleared staff, and ownership in Kiel is no bar even in the most sensitive compartment of a nuclear boat. That is worth holding against the line London takes on foreign ownership elsewhere in its submarine-heavy investment plan. Signal No. 148 carried the award without a value. Expect the eventual contract notice to land near the ministry's own figure, and the sum that matters, decades of support, never to appear in one. Not even sure they called it a main frame then, it ran on Fortran IV our programmes were run through Unix card machines.
