WINGELLO, 177km from Central, is another very quiet station serving a small rural town. It has two platforms, but weirdly there's no pedestrian path between them - you have to walk in the traffic lane at the level crossing. Both platforms have weatherboard waiting rooms. (1/2)

Today's historic pic: The railway station at Wingello, NSW, November 9 1985. Wingello station, 177km south of Sydney, is still largely intact but whilst heavy goods and long distance passenger trains run through, just a handful of Southern Highlands Line trains now stop each day.

just home from a weekend in the NSW Southern Highlands, came back to the tablelands then Canberra through Wingello etc, essentially the back way before the road joins the Hume north of Goulburn, gorgeous drive too - highlands drenched in fog for the entire weekend, very Brigadoon in Bundanoon :)

Today's historic pic: 37 years ago today, Alco diesel loco 4814 and a works train sits on the main line next to the distant signal on the down side of Wingello, NSW, April 1 1987. 4814 looks a bit different as, unusually, it was not fitted with a buffing plate that was standard on NSW diesel locos.

PS Whilst I am confident of the date on this photo, my records have this as Penrose. However, based on the track curve and the km post, I believe it was in fact taken at Wingello. Can anyone confirm this?

The burger was very good - certainly a top 5 all time burger. However, the ‘discovery’ of Wingello by ‘Sydney people’ meant an hour’s wait for food to be served. Which turned out for the best in terms of rail photography, but not great for a prompt lunch

In September of 2019 it looked (correctly) like the bushfire season was ramping up very early, and I reached out to my dad to ask what he thought.
When I was growing up, he was a NSW Rural Fire Service brigade captain. He'd also been on the frontlines in the 1965 bushfires, at 15 years old.

"In the 1964-65 season, fires raged in the Snowy Mountains,
Southern Tablelands and outer metropolitan areas of Sydney.
The Chatsbury/Bungonia fire covered 250,000ha and destroyed
the village of Wingello. Three lives were lost. In March 1965, the
Tumut Valley fire burnt out 80,000ha. Three years later during
the 1968-69 seasons, major fires in Wollongong destroyed 33
homes, five other buildings and devastated rainforest. During
that same season, fires in the lower Blue Mountains were fanned
by 100kph winds destroying 123 buildings. Three lives were lost.
The end of the decade saw a savage fire in Roto, east of Ivanhoe
which burnt 280,000ha over a three week period."
