"blackface" in performance is controversial. You shouldn't need to fake coloured characters that way. Can there be an excuse?

Maybe.

I am going to slightly nervously point at the "Wintersmith", where Terry Pratchett deliberately mirrored Mid-Summer traditions in England. White turning to Black.

The opening chapter of Wintersmith where Tiffany is rescuing the lambs is one of the most dramatic chapters in all of the discworld books IMO.

From Wintersmith, by Sir Terry Prachett.

What makes a man?
Iron enough to make a nail
Lime enough to paint a wall
Water enough to drown a dog
Sulphur enough to kill the fleas
Potash enough to wash a shurt
Gold enough to buy a bean
Silver enough to coat a pin
Lead enough to ballast a bird

Lastly Tiffany. imo, you should wait on this series until after you read the Witches Series. They intersect a lot and it'll be nice to have context. These follow suit with focusing on myth and growing up.

From Terry Pratchett's "Wintersmith." I've often thought this same thought with my own deeply conflicted brain.

I was hoping to find some Discworld books, specifically some of the art and companion books. I found a 2006 first edition of Wintersmith, used but in great condition for only a few dollars.

@rincewind.run finished Wintersmith. Beautifully written as always and LOVED the witches but I didn’t find the title character (or his attempts to woo Tiffany) that enthralling.

Admittedly I’m not a big fan of romance as a genre.

Looking forward to the next installment though

Ha!

Enjoying Wintersmith. Thinking Traveling Librarian would be my dream job!

Do you think it would be possible to be a Librarian Witch?

Or a witch with a disability like limited mobility?

@rincewind.run over halfway thru Wintersmith.

Loving it of course but wonder why Miss Tick never got a cottage

So many but my moral development is equal parts my dad’s Lutheran pastoring, my mom’s steady work, Susan Cooper’s SEAWARD, Terry Pratchett’s WINTERSMITH, and Diane Duane’s SO YOU WANT TO BE A WIZARD (with later L’Engle, Tamora Pierce, John M. Ford, and too many other good people I can’t remember rn)
In honor of Dolly and her commitment to getting books to kids, tell me about a book you read as a child that changed your life.

I’ll start: so many, but tonight maybe I’ll say A WRINKLE IN TIME, a book that taught me anger wasn’t wrong.

"On the all-party primary, everybody gets to vote in every contested race. ... It will jumpstart competition and you won’t have to pick which contested races you vote in. ... So, that will fully enfranchise unenrolled voters," shares Danielle Allen.

@amalelmohtar.com greatly enjoyed The River Has Roots. It's just crying out to be turned into a Folk-Opera, like Steeleye Span did for Wintersmith.

“But I didn’t call on anyone!”

“You did,” said Anoia, blowing more sparks. “You cussed. Sooner or later, every curse is a prayer.”

So in love with the Tiffany Aching series...Waiting on Wintersmith from the library though I think until it's officially Autumn to read it.

Meanwhile just started Monstrous Regiment.

I finished Wintersmith. It’s nice watching Tiffany grow up. She was in two different love triangles here. I like the tweaks to the Witch lore. I miss the cameos and footnotes from the older books.

Making Money is next.
