I’m still shrugging into a white coat as I enter Triage. Carolyn looks up from the nurses' station and blinks. Her mouth falls open for just a moment. Then she smiles and hefts just one of her eyebrows. She looks me in the eye and taps one finger on her throat. I feel heat rise. I know I’m blushing. I pull the Nehru collar of my scrubs up as much as they’ll go to cover the bite marks.

"May I ?" the Avatar sretched it's hand towards Vela's void tech protuding right. "Will this hurt ?" Vela had instinctively pulled her hand bodywards, recoiling from the artifical hand's reach. - Probably not, but I know little about what happened in your hand, I'll have to hold it tightly for a stable connection. - the avatar explained patiently. It's big black eyes and round features distracted Vela from the immensely huge room surrounding them. The water lazily seeped around their ankles. Everyone was calmly focusing on the three standing in open water by the treetrunk. Vela swallowed and put her hand cautiously in the Avatar's. It was warm and surprisingly soft, like the finest fur or leaf surface. Hard to tell. Nori let go of Vela's other hand, watching intently. - Establishing connection-protocol -. Its hand gripped Vela's very firmly, the tech-lines started blinking busily. A similar thing happened to the Avatar, lines of tiny lights started marching back and forth its arm, extruding among its back and wings. Holographic glyphs lit up around them, cascading circles of data and symbols floated, rose from the water and blurred out in the room's foggy air. Nori could barely read all the log data. The computational power of the whole building, perhaps the city was focusing on ad-hoc creation of a Void-tech compatible protocol. - Creating 6-dimensional datascape. - the avatar's voice changed to a darker distorted version. Vela flinched from the sudden change in tone and volume. But her hand was firmly lodged in the avatars. It was starting to get really warm. She could feel the tech-lines convulse.

It's 4:30 am. I'm going to go back to bed as soon as I've got this down; it feels like it might be important. I dreamt that I was in a forest fire. I was safe because I was a ghost, but no one else was. The trees blazed all around me, and I felt the heat of their passing. Animals fled past me, wide-eyed and panicked, predator and prey united in terror. Firefighters sprayed water that turned to steam. Flames jumped from crown to crown. The wind was hot and stank of ash and endings. I walked unhurt but not unmarked to the edge of a sullen lake whose entire surface had gone black with ash. I watched its lazy undulations for a while, like a pool of oil disturbed by unseen forces. Beneath the ash, beneath the water, I knew that entire ecosystems were collapsing. When I looked behind me the forest was gone, and it was there (I still can't write the word; why?). Dull red brick, windowless, that lambent arch beckoning. I blinked, and I was right beside it, almost ready to step onto its flagstone floor. I heard the susurrus, and one voice threaded out of the rest, like someone stage-whispering to be heard above a crowd: «On vous attend au couronne.» *We're waiting for you at the top.*

#WIPSsnips today got me thinking about Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. I always loved the Very Fine Drawings by Brett Helquist! The style is so unique & they have just the right gothic vibes.

Repulsed by their presence, I threw my head back but they followed. The being hovered an inch from my face. Their grin widened and I could see every feature of the sickly face and every rotted teeth beneath their smile. Rotted breath intoxicated my nostrils. Pale beaded green eyes detained my gaze. Crusted brown lips crinkled through words. “When you’re near death, you come here.” They slammed their cold lips against my quivering face, and shoved their pus-soaked tongue down my throat. Oozing. Lumpy curdled hot liquid flooded my mouth. I couldn’t move. My eyes watering with cheeks stretched to the limits. Tears and snot streamed down my face to their firm ridgid hands holding me still. Vomit surged its way up only to be swallowed as there was no escape for it. I violently began coughing. Choking on their tongue and my failed throw-up. They pulled back, with pleasure seeping from every pore. I gasped for air. “Ahhh.” They licked their lips. “Now that you’ve had the kiss of death, I will enlighten you.”

She remembered sunshine on her face and rain in her hair, she remembered stars and wind and ocean spray. She remembered hotels with their high firm beds and aseptic air conditioning. She remembered sparse snow on sand dunes, the beach pebbles slick with frozen spray. She remembered the smell of myrrh and the classroom it conjured, cartoonish capital letters capering along the top of the green blackboard. She remembered Christmas at the city house, the children (the *grand*children, and how was that possible?) sledding down the hill in the back forty, the tree hung with fragile glass and bubbling lights, garlands and thin strips of silver that flashed and twinkled. She remembered the boys, her sons, having a hushed conversation that stopped when they noticed she'd tottered with her gnarled-wood cane into the room. (Cane? She remembered pain in her hips, her knee, her ankle, but there was no pain anymore.) She remembered the blast of humid heat as she left the mall's climate control, high summer in the city, nothing like it. She remembered lakewater and the faint smell of fish that you never get at the poolside. She remembered Nathan above her, *in* her, naked, both of them sweating in the summer's languid heat, the ceiling fan useless against it. She remembered her father's funeral, the hard ground, the bitter wind, the snow crunching underfoot. She remembered the plane banking over Heathrow at night, seeing London for the first time as jeweled lights glowing softly, diffusely through a mist. She remembered ink on the side of her hand, the left-hander's curse, after signing that first contract, and the second, and after a while it became a ritual, a tradition, a private celebration as the sums on the $______ line grew fatter and fatter. She remembered Peter's terrified face after he'd blurted out "Mom, Dad, I'm gay!" and the way his face cracked as she and Nathan embraced him and they all cried, weeping with love and the collapse of fear into relief. [cont'd] [cont'd from first image] She remembered George's funeral, the bright summer sunshine, the cheery clouds making it seem unreal there could be this much grief in the world. She remembered lightning so bright it was like a flashbulb, so near it was followed by an immediate sizzling *crack!* She remembered winding a scarf around one of the grandchildren, completing the outfit, and then when he said "I need to pee" having to unwind the scarf, unzip the snowsuit, unlace the boots, and stand aside as he dashed upstairs. She remembered # "I remember a lot of things." "Do you remember the world before you were born? Do you remember the face you had before?" "Don't be absurd."
