I only go when I trust that the woman holding space has confronted her internalised patriarchy.
So she creates a space that welcomes and validates all women's experiences.
Instead of unknowingly creating another box for women to fit in, constructing another ideal for women to strive to become.
The perfect woman is no longer the 1950s demure housewife (though she's making a tradwife
comeback...) nor the 2000s successful career woman.
In many women's circles, the feminine ideal is the sexy goddess - an abundant, sensual and fertile lover and always available supermama rolled into one.
She's put on a pedestal at the expense of other expressions of the feminine that patriarchy shuns: the crone, the wild woman, the wayward mother, the rebellious maiden.
It's not that the lush, sensual feminine isn't a beautiful expression of womanhood - it totally is, and it's so healing especially for those of us who didn't have a chance to joyfully and safely embody our sexuality and love.
Yet to me there's a painful irony to this archetype becoming dominant in women's circles.
Because it's a version of womanhood that's palatable and useful to patriarchy.
Wrapped in a sensual cocoon of love and abundance, she rarely protests the inequalities of household labour and often fails to acknowledge the systemic abuse in her own lineage.
And we're encouraged to embody her often not for our own liberation and freedom of expression, but in order to attract a man.

So the whole project of creating women's circle spaces beyond the male gaze in fact becomes all about
attracting the male gaze.
Instead of coming to terms with how hard it is to find a man willing to enter into an equal relationship where he's not benefitting unilaterally from our labour, we bend over backwards figuring out what's wrong with us for not attracting the right man.
It makes my perimenopausal Wild Woman go mad.
An emotion that is often frowned upon, even discouraged in the new age universe in which many women's circles take place.
Which makes me even madder.
Because our anger is most often a healthy expression of boundaries being violated. It teaches us where they lie, how we can communicate them, and how we can protect them.
Especially in our luteal phase and perimenopause years, our anger is our ally, our guide to peace and power.
When we learn how to embody it, hold and alchemise its fiery energy, we can take empowered action.
To say that anger is a low vibrational state basically equals robbing women of self defence.
We live in a patriarchal society where at least 60% of women have experienced emotional and physical abuse and almost all women suffer from men's disrespect one way or another.
So if women's circles teach women to be soft, sexy girls only, they dismantle our tools for liberation.
They in fact become part of what upholds violence against women.

It breaks my heart that women would gather the courage to come to circle to finally be heard and seen, only to be quietly shaped into patriarchal dolls.

So I don't go to these circles.
I go to the ones that foster our tools for liberation.

That support our raw expression of what it means to live our lives in a woman's body.
Yes, also to embrace our free-flowing sensuality in a safe space.

But not to mistake that for the single expression of a woman's essence.

After all, ovulation - the moment in our menstrual cycle when we feel the lover and mother archetypes most strongly - only last a few days compared to almost two weeks of luteal fire.

So it's high time we learned how to express ourselves without our ovulatory rose-tinted glasses, which we lose anyway during perimenopause leaving us with a few more decades of raw Crone power.

The wild & wise feminine voices that the world has so badly missed.
May we en masse - 1.2 billion by 2030! - usher in a post-patriarchal world.
