Though it is shorter and far less aquatic than Wonambi, Notechis has an environmental preference for wetlands, and habitat around permanent still and flowing water bodies. Indeed they shared a herpetological community in the Pleistocene, demonstrating similar habitat requirements.

Its difficult to see how Pleistocenea aboriginals, might have wiped out Wonambi.

Dynatoaetus thus joins Wonambi, as an outlier among Pleistocene extinctions.

Such cases are useful exceptions, with which to test assumptions about Quarternary overkill. And both are South Australian diapsids.

Wonambi and other madtsoiids might (or not) form a clade with the marine simoliophids. Either way, they are not crown snakes, and not improbably retained flexable hindlimbs.

Like the monotremes, and the tuatara, Wonambi was an Australasian 'living fossil' within the timeline of Homo sapiens.

Wonambi climate tolerance, seems comparable to the terrestrial, temperate elapid, Notechis scutatus.

Its unknown why temperate zones on other continents, did not boast huge water snakes. Though Wonambi was not only shorter than the longest constrictors, but also the longest colubroids.
October 15, 2023 at 6:39 AM
I estimated this myself, after comparing the vertebral centrae of Wonambi to those of unrelated swimming snakes, such as Nerodia, Acrochordus, and Laticauda. No snake of similar length or ecology, went extinct elsewhere in the Quaeternary. Certainly not at such latitudes, or in such a climate zone.
October 15, 2023 at 6:23 AM
The size of Wonambi is oft overestimated, based upon an inappropriate model of constricting snakes. The vertebrae rule out such adaptations, whereas the teeth demonstrate habitual piscivory.

Likely, Wonambi was below 3 meters long, and weighed under 18 kgs.

Then again, nor was Wonambi, a freshwater stem snake from temperate South Australia, which probably retained jointed hindlimbs. Its obviously extinct, but why? Based on phylogeny, ecology, and geography, you wouldn't have expected Wonambi to go extinct at that time. By human cause or otherwise.

Paleoart speedpaint of the Wonambi genus of madtsoiid snake from Australia that went extinct within the last 50,000 years. #paleoart

A few ideas:

Desert Lands
- A wonambi guarding her clutch of eggs.

Grass Lands:
- Paranthropus foraging.
If you could add just one single sequence to any episode, what would it be? Assume you have to stick to the constraints of what Prehistoric Planet is willing to show as goes violence/gore and related content.

I want to see an episode dedicated solely to Australia's ecosystem during this time. Focus on more than just Megalania and Thylacoleo though. Include all the other megafauna like Meiolania, Quinkana, Wonambi, Dromornis, and more

The crests are a combination of Spinosaurus and Ceratosaurus.
The outline was done using Varanus and Prognathodon as bases. For the anatomical details I used snakes such as Wonambi and Najash.

I love the paleomeme of making Wonambi a true Rainbow Serpent. This is one of the best versions of that design scheme!

tbf we aren’t sure if Titanoboa was a constrictor since it was more of a fish-eater, better option would be Vasuki indicus or Wonambi

🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Wonambi spp.

From Miocene to Late Pleistocene Australia, "dreamtime serpent" was a genus of non-venomous, constricting madtsoiid snake up to 6 meters long. It would ambush kangaroos and wallabies near water, though its prey size was limited by its small head
