Indeed. There are other wordprocessors that save .docx files, some of them quite good, but once you get captured by a feature none of the others have, you're hooked.

Make sure you're printing in grayscale and not 'black' text in colour. Black in most Wordprocessors is usually 'rich black' which contains some Blue (cyan) which is why it needs both.

I had a saturday job in a shareware place, and we had games for the PCW on the list, I made ok pocket money selling copies at school as the lab with the wordprocessors wasn't staffed by teachers at lunchtime like all the other computer rooms were. ;)

I've said it before, but Wordperfect 5.1 was one of the best writers tools ever.
All the options you needed. I appreciate the extensive features available on newer wordprocessors, but I only use maybe 5% of those extra options, and only rarely.

Also means huge remedial load teaching them stuff they should already know, like how to edit text files as well as images, and how to use ftp.

Personally I use the "minus" dash '-'. It bugs me when wordprocessors change it to an em- or en-dash, partially because there is no en-dash or em-dash key

Indeed, writing is tough. It's always been for me. Writing something, rewriting it, skipping some stuff, restating something else, putting back what I'd skipped, finding it's still not really good etc... I once had a 2-page paper rewritten more than a dozen times. I'm grateful to wordprocessors... 😉
