wrongthink
#WordOfTheWeek
Imagine spending about a half million dollars for a college degree that might be revoked for wrongthink at any point after you graduate.
What does a degree from Columbia even mean if it can be revoked after graduation due to political pressure? Like think about the exposure you'd have

anticipatory compliance

#WordOfTheWeek
unless anyone has a better name for this
a reminder that it’s our duty as regular citizens to refuse to comply or assist these actions as much as possible! any time you encounter the opportunity to stick a wrench in the works, do so

sexy apocalypse
#WordOfTheWeek
There have always been humans who thought:

1) The world will end soon
2) It will happen in a cool, exciting way
3) It’ll happen to me personally
4) I’ll be a martyred prophet, or a warlord, or otherwise special
5) People who don’t see this are lesser

“Sexy apocalypse” is a great phrase for that
Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

Kavanaugh stop

#WordOfTheWeek
Kavanaugh Stop - "Brief detainment by lawless masked federal agents inflicting serious bodily injury, followed by weeks in a makeshift shithole overcrowded jail, and then being flown in the dark of night to a slave prison in some other country after which your name is disappeared from all records."

sadopopulism

#WordOfTheWeek
"This is, at the moment, the official voice of the US government: a rancid mixture of trolling, cruelty, propaganda, and crass jokes about the human suffering they’re creating."
The official voice of the US government is cruel, gross, and weird. What is that doing to us?
Joking memes about imprisonment, deportation, and death by alligator are designed to radicalize and desensitize.

Marketing guy described ChatGPT as his "thought partner" and I was doing my best not to tell him that framing the bullshit extruder as an intellectual peer isn't exactly a great look

symbolic compliance
#WordOfTheWeek
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.
