Somehow my WorldCat is in Taiwanese Mandarin?

Why do these weird language switches keep happening to me lately? 🤔

"Jen why are you using WorldCat if you're in a library?"

well, if we happen to get non fiction that is not catalogued, as part of the processing, I need to look up the Dewey call number to make the spine label.

and WorldCat had an "experimental cataloging project" that. uh. ended. 💀

I once spent an entire afternoon on WorldCat chasing a rare out-of-print cookbook—my research felt very scholarly until I realized I just wanted the pie recipe.

does WorldCat have the most annoying login in the world? maybe

you go to the site, you click "sign in"
you enter your email
it brings you to a SECOND page where you enter your email AND your password
then you're signed in

WorldCat is very suddenly defaulting to French, so I guess I tricked the Internet into thinking I am Francophone

If you, a layperson, read this far, here's a trick. If you see something questionable at your library's discard sale, look it up in WorldCat. You may find that it is a duplicate, or there are multiple copies in other libraries in town. It may be fully digitized online for free.

sorry to be extra grumpy about it, weeding outrage discourse is very very common! not every library needs every book! looking stuff up in worldcat and seeing just how many (ILL-able) copies exist nearby can be helpful context

It would be cool if someone with tech skills (not me) made an app for zine makers and stores that does what Worldcat does for libraries, where shops carrying your zines can be listed and sorted based on how many miles away they are from where the user lives.

The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway's first novel, turns 100 today.

⤵️ Revisit our #OCLCresearch study released this year to see how books held in library collections worldwide offer a unique look at the literary popularity of Hemingway and other 20th-century American writers. #OCLCworldcat
The Importance of Being Ernest Hemingway: Measuring Literary Popularity and Impact with WorldCat Data
Ernest Hemingway is the most famous 20th-century American novelist, according to a recent article in The Economist. What is the evidence? Among other things, the article cites Wikipedia traffic data, noting that Hemingway’s page has accumulated more than 30 million views over the past 10 years (the second-ranked author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, attracted less than half that total). But is this truly the most reliable data source for understanding an author’s popularity, and can library catalog data offer us a more complete picture?

A student in #APLit this week found a book for his research that would be helpful. We used WorldCat and found it is at a nearby college campus. He stepped into the hall, called the librarian, and arranged to go visit and see the book.

The lesson: research can be an adventure 😁

Worldcat produces tons of returns. What I love about that, is that it confirms that many libraries actually will catalog things without ISBNs—something people (losers) try to use to dismiss zines and self-published material.
