It's #WorldGiraffeDay. Come for a walk through with Pips. She is nine months old, and we rescued her in September 2025 after her mother was killed by lions. She had been hiding alone for days, slipping in to drink at a water trough and disappearing again.

At the left, Dionysus rides in a chariot pulled by panthers. Preceding him is a procession of his followers & exotic animals, including lions, elephants, & even a giraffe. A bird's nest is concealed in the tree at the far right; on the same tree a snake is pursuing a lizard. Many of the animals depicted had special significance in the mystery cult of Dionysus Sabazius. On the lid is the birth of Dionysus and his reception by nymphs, shown between satyr heads (on the ends), one smiling and one frowning. The enormous attention to detail on this sarcophagus exemplifies the talents of the best Roman relief carvers. Many captive animals struggle and refuse food, though Hüet's animal is completely calm. This carefully and beautifully observed watercolor of a giraffe also functions somewhat like a "deci-sive moment" photograph. It is unusual in that it shows the trappings of a captured wild animal. The bridle, the neck bell, and even the knot used to secure the giraffe to the pine tree are rarely portrayed in nineteenth-century images of wild ani-mals. The giraffe's acceptance of its fate is evident also in the relaxation of the keeper, who doesn't feel the need to keep an eye on his charge, leaning back in his chair in complete idleness.
