The third World Ocean Assessment — produced by 600 experts from 86 countries — is the most comprehensive evidence base we have on ocean health. Fifty-seven treaties. One ocean. The science is robust. Can governance finally catch up?

Ocean benefits increasingly undermined by human activity, UN assessment reveals
Greater understanding of the ocean is essential if the world is to recover better from the COVID-19 pandemic and achieve agreed targets on sustainable development and climate action, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Wednesday in launching a major study on what he called “the life support system of our planet.”

[#MOW2021] The #WorldOceanAssessment provides scientific basis for action and could move towards further policy relevance. According to @LlevinAnn @Scripps_Ocean, WOA becoming Phase 1️⃣ of the IPOC could support the policy uptake of #oceanscience !🌊

Today is # WorldOceanDay, and the UN has released the 3rd #WorldOceanAssessment, its most comprehensive review yet of ocean health.

Produced every 5 years by hundreds of scientists, it gives governments and policymakers the evidence they need to act. We hope it spurs urgent action #WOAIII #OurOcean

Humanity’s future depends on protecting the rapidly changing ocean

#Ocean destruction accelerating while global protections remain fragmented and underfunded

It absorbs most of Earth's excess heat but can only take so much; intimately related to our #climate

Humanity’s future depends on protecting the rapidly changing ocean
The ocean covers more than 70 per cent of the planet and regulates climate, sustains biodiversity, and supports economies and cultures worldwide. It’s the foundation of life on Earth.

#WorldOceanAssessment highlights urgent need for science and global action

Decades of #ocean research exist, but nations still lack political will to act on what science already tells us about marine ecosystem collapse
World Ocean Assessment highlights urgent need for science and global action
In the wood-panelled rooms of New York’s storied Explorers Club, where portraits of pioneering adventurers line the walls, diplomats, scientists and ocean advocates gathered on Tuesday evening with a shared sense of urgency – and anticipation.
