A days ago, I spoke with a journalist in Ukraine about #WorldWarZoos. It was a true honor. Much more soon.

Gli animali sono spesso considerati vittime di serie B della guerra, che la società ci insegna a far passare in secondo piano rispetto al dramma umano.

Ne ho scritto in un mio approfondimento pubblicato su Il Tascabile 👇

Animali in guerra
I teatri di guerra rendono tangibile l’ambiguità del nostro rapporto con gli altri animali: vittime strutturali della violenza umana, giuridicamente invisibili e trattati come moralmente sacrificabili...

I am thrilled and humbled by @kevinprenger.bsky.social's generous review of my new book "World War Zoos."

I've had plenty of doubts about this book, I'll admit.

Still, it is immensly gratifying to know that I was able to know that folks appreciate my effort.

#Zoos aren't woke, but they've never been apolitical.

Check out a short piece I wrote for The Conversation.

Pandas and politics − from World War II to the Cold War, zoos have always been ideological
Zoos aren’t woke, but they aren’t politically neutral, either.

Wartime zoo tips for food savings:

1. Plant victory gardens.
2. Feed zoo animals "patriotic diets" (cat meat + cod's liver oil = substitute for fresh fish).
3. Feed some animals to other animals.
4. Close the zoo.

Not sure these tips are helpful....

Zoos are strange, often troubling, places. What's undeniable is the beauty of the animals they hold. In my research, I've amassed thousands of photos of zoo animals. I thought I'd share a few.

#zoo critics aren't the only ones to describe them as animal jails. Just see the latest #wallace&gromit film.

I discuss the WW2 context for this metaphor in my new book #WorldWarZoos.
