This 1852 painting by William Firth depicts the moment in 1717 when English poet Alexander Pope declares his undying love to Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, and her response is a fit of laughter (brutal!).

Both characters are worth knowing in a little more depth.

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, wife to the English Diplomat to the Ottoman Court, witnessed smallpox inoculations at Istanbul in 1717, a city she claimed was healthier and larger than London. Montagu was so taken by the procedure that she had her children inoculated.

Wortley Hall, Barnsley a building with a fascinating history. Rebuilt in 1586 it was originally the ancestral home of the Earls of Wharncliffe, the Lords of the Manor of Wortley. It was put up for lease in 1950 and on 5th May 1951,

In 1712, Lady Mary married Edward Wortley Montagu who was British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.

Pockmarked by smallpox, she observed the custom of inoculation while traveling with her husband & had her own children treated. She brought the practice back to England.
