“No, no. Your Mom told me ‘no more Milton Smith’. She was very particular about it.” I wagged a finger in an imitation that my daughter would have slapped my hand for. My granddaughter found it delightful, clapped her little hands together while her younger brother threw a palm over his mouth to cover his chuckling. “Now you two kids need to get some sleep. Maybe I’ll read you the one about the Barnowl. You love that one.” The mirth stopped in a heart beat, two pairs of young blue eyes locked onto mine. I wondered if between the crevasses of time, they could still make out the mischievous twinkle that would give my game away. My grandson looked stern, a pout on his lips. But his sister, quick as a bullet from a six shooter, had me pinned. She smiled triumphantly as she folded her arms, “You never listen to mommy. You promised.” I cracked instantly, set myself with a groan into the creaky old wood chair. “It's a terrible song of metal, sand and blood. The Barn owl would be much nicer,” I argued with a half smile. Two pouting faces were my reward. My grandson furrowed his little brow, “You said a story not a song Grampa.” I shrugged. “Okay, okay, it's a story. Tuck yourselves in and let's go visit the tragedy of old Milton Smith. Yehaw

Scent plays an important role when it comes to cooking, so when using very... "fragrant" ingredients be sure to do it somewhere the smell won't spread too much.

As Drilltooth ran off, Okashi had set down a cutting board with chopped, uncooked sausages that smelled less than fresh, the rabbit next to Tycho shuddered at its smell. In an instant Tycho tossed it all in stirring it in, the smell of the sausage only getting stronger as it sweat, the marshmallow rabbit now gagged at the smell, even the grey one muttered "Gods above." under their breath, waving a paw. But Tycho took a deep sniff getting a heavy whiff of it. Then nodded, as he began to make a mixture from the spices Drilltooth collected, stirring it in the bowl, tipping his head to the rabbit, it slid over the chopped okra, celery, and garlic. Tycho tossed them in, though smell didnt exactly get better, but the garlic certainly helped the odor. As he let the veggies and sausage cook, getting nice and toasted, thankfully with his extensive grocery list he had remembered to ask Drilltooth to grab some seafood stock at the same time, pouring it in. That seemed to cover the smell a bit more, as Tycho double checked his spice, giving it a sniff over the pot, seeming satisfied he poured in the spice mixture he brewed. Adding the rosemary, thyme, and bayleaves as well to simmer. Then tossed in worcestershire and the hot sauce he requested, getting a bit of a skeptical look from Drilltooth as he clung to Tycho's back. Tycho looked to the rabbit on fish, he passed the bowl to the marshmallow rabbit, who passed it to Tycho. He added it to the pot, stirring it all together. Drilltooth scratched his head seeing the mixture. Tycho was glad he specifically picked a corner stove away from a lot of others this gumbo had a fragrant scent. As Tycho watched over it, stirring occasionally eventually he could feel Okashi's presence approaching. "Hows the Gumbo... or should I say sausage? Okashi simply asked. "Ready." Tycho simply answered, as Okashi suddenly held out a small bowl with a spoon in it. "I'll be the judge of that." She simply stated.

By the time I was about your age…in elf years, I was an officer. Then I met Dee-Dee and things changed. We wanted to be together forever but that's not how Elven culture works. He didn’t care that I was gay, even back then, but her caste made it ‘impossible’. Duty, country, honor. All the filler words old men say when they want to control you.” Her mouth gaped open like a fish, but Zaya didn’t seem to notice. “Told him off. Two middle fingers to the face. Told him he couldn’t banish me, cause I was leaving. Never looking back. He’d made me choose between him and her, and I chose her. He repaid me with the worst beating of my life. Then cut off my military braid, and…carved that into my back.” “Holy fuck–” “Then he shot me, to drive home how dead I was to him. Dee-Dee found me before I bled out, took me to a healer who didn’t mind getting their hands dirty on deserter scum. You think my story’s bad, her mother forced…” She stopped. “Not my story to tell. But they wanted her to suffer.” Her eyes focused again, and she turned to face Nat. “She didn’t deserve it. I didn’t deserve it. You, Nat…you didn’t deserve it.” The protest was little more than a watery squeak. “You don’t know what I did–” The storms in the older elf’s gray eyes were back. “You. Did Not. Deserve. It.”
