It’s my daughter’s book, technically, but we’re reading it together.

By the end of Resignation (Sunrise epilogue included), I want readers to feel comforted. No matter what you go through in your life, you won’t always be stuck in that place & life can get better. Healing & recovery isn’t easy or linear, but it is possible.

Are you hoping to share something with your readers beyond a good tale? Is there a deeper meaning you want to impress on them?

omg there are so many lol

Most backstory details that don’t explicitly come up in Jayde POV still influenced the way I wrote everyone. A (not so) fun (but interesting) one is that Ice is why James picked up a cigarette habit. They did petty thefts together in middle school. 😅

We all have to kill our darlings or prune the roses (whatever metaphor you prefer), and that means snipping out parts you loved but have grown wise enough to know it isn't working. What's one of yours?

Happy birthday!!

It’s cheating since it’s my own book, but Jayde & I share the same birthday (June 1). She turns 19 at the start of Sidetracked, though her actual birthday isn’t featured in the book (because it was lowkey depressing for her 😅).

I’m 4 years older than she is.

Mine is in The Lord of the Rings: On October 24, TA 3018, Frodo Baggins woke up in the House of Elrond in Rivendell.

Have you ever found your birthday in a book?

Each of my books & MCs have their own playlist, but I tend to only listen to them for fun or while drawing or formatting. I listen to instrumental music while writing so I don’t get distracted (often the Homestuck or Undertale/Deltarune soundtracks lol).
#WritingLifeMonthly
📚 #WritingLifeMonthly October Day 22 📚

Do you listen to music when you write? I know a romance writer who has a playlist she listens to before writing, so she can get in the mood.

This is mine:

Something Familiar’s opening paragraph is my favorite:

If someone told me a few months back that I’d die before the end of summer, I would’ve laughed them out of the room. But this is the story of how I will almost certainly die, and I’m not laughing.

This…is easily my worst typo ever (also my favorite). Of course, as with all of the very worst typos, I caught it perhaps 2 days after I sent out epubs to beta readers. LMAO

Sidetracked series (original paperback) covers + quick Sunrise cover mockup I made in Canva a few weeks ago

I figure I’ll give Sunrise the grunge texture & star overlay like the others, but it’ll be the only one without the bloody handprint.

👉writing a book is the hardest part of being an author👈

This is…half-true, but I think marketing books & getting people to read them is just as hard (if not harder) than finishing a book is, and the time/effort spent on marketing makes writing more books even more difficult.

(2) Artists should work for love, not money

I decided to write Sunrise because I wanted to explore Jayde & James’ relationship once they’re no longer stuck in semi-delusional survival mode, but it turns out they’re intense ride or die even when their biggest problem is spending Christmas with Jayde’s (very chill) human family.

Finishing a draft is the hardest part. I get completion anxiety bc I don’t want it to be over, which leads to me procrastinating by peeking at other unfinished projects, rereading/editing what I’ve already written over & over, and doomscrolling on social media.

This is always embarrassing to answer for Sidetracked bc I started writing it when I was 13 after being introduced to the YA paranormal romance genre via Twilight. Something about the Twilight Saga really made me want to write my own YA PNR (but Darker™ & Edgier™). So I did. 😇

Jayde: “The Moon Will Sing” The Crane Wives
James: “Lucky Charms” Anson Seabra
Ice: “Kronos” Keaton Henson
Night: “My Heart Still Beats” Maria Mena

Crystal: “Stray Italian Greyhound” Vienna Teng
Daniel: “Ghosting” Mother Mother

I’m…not sure! Drafting is the most frustrating & time consuming part (the only part I ever get *stuck* on & find myself avoiding/procrastinating), but it’s also the core essence of writing, and drafting when inspired / in the zone is one of my absolute favorite things. 😅

Editing! I love rewriting scenes and line editing passes. Even proofreading. I think I could spend forever editing. I mean,,, I use to rewrite entire works just for fun. lol

That moment while drafting where you get SUPER inspired & a scene flows very easily is always nice too.

James (Sidetracked) or Daniel (Something Familiar)!

They’re the two I have most in common with. James is just a normal guy, but Daniel has lived through my favorite historical periods, and I would love to ask him about them (he also loves talking about history). i love Daniel 🥲

Besides mine? 😂😅

I think about The Giver, Fahrenheit 451, and Catcher in the Rye a lot, which is impressive considering I haven’t read them since high school. Perhaps I should reread them & see if they’re as good as I remember.

I’m Sam, an indie author/artist from the PNW USA. I may alternate between talking about Sidetracked’s holiday epilogue novella (cozy winter vibes) & Something Familiar (magic users & familiars vs magical fascists). No real goal this month.

this was a long month, and I feel like I barely got anything done. But I did well sales-wise thanks to a couple itch bundles. RCCC was a massive L (didn’t even earn back half of my table fee 😭), but I had fun & learned a few things I can apply at my next event.
