Within one day of exactly 13 months since I had to say goodbye to #BaboyTheDog I also had to say goodbye to #WuloTheOriginal. The 1st and 2nd days of the month are going to be sad for me for a very long time. I miss them both so much.

A picture from 2015 with my dog Wulo (blond/white, blue collar) on the left and Baboy (blue/white, black collar) on the right. Both are pit bull terrier mixes. This is a long shot, taken at eye level with my dogs sitting on the driveway, and the park area behind them seems really far away. The picture was taken in the fall so there are leaves all over the driveway around them. I unexpectedly had to say goodbye to Baboy 6.1.2024. He was somewhere between 12-13 years old. He was having concerning symptoms and I took him to the emergency vet expecting that whatever it was would be treatable...and it wasn't. It seriously was one of the worst days of my life, Baboy was the love of my life and my heart dog and I definitely wasn't ready. Wulo was very different. He was fifteen when we said goodbye July 1. His last year with us he had been diagnosed with some really serious health stuff and pretty much any vet would have said we had a few weeks together. We had a year. And 8-10 months of that was really really good. The last 3 or so months, it got a lot harder, but we were able to keep him happy and comfortable. When the last day came, it was time because we had reached the floor where the concern was no matter how hard I tried, he would not be able to stay happy and comfortable. So saying goodbye was super sad and hard, but there is no feeling that we lost him too soon the way it was with Baboy. This has been a really difficult 18 months and I just don't know what else I can say about it.

My dogs are sitting in the middle of the room with sun coming in through the window. They are all pit bull mixes. Baboy (blue/white) is on the left, Wulo (blond/white) is in the middle, Mr. Tooticus Rex (blue/white) is on the right. Sadly, both Baboy and Wulo are gone now. We unexpectedly had to say goodbye to Baboy just over a year ago. And we had to say goodbye to Wulo yesterday.

Happy times in 2018. It is exactly 11 months since I unexpectedly had to say goodbye to #BaboyTheDog and #WuloTheOriginal, who is almost 15, has been diagnosed pancreatic cancer. These are tough times and I am really feeling it right now.

They are both happy and excited because I am about to give them chicken nuggets. They were brothers that were together for 11 years until I unexpectedly had to say goodbye to Baboy exactly 11 months ago. Now Wulo is almost 15 and was recently diagnosed with a type of cancer called insulinoma. We are still able to keep him happy and comfortable for now, but his health has deteriorated significantly since February 14. I know we don't have much time left together and combined with the around the clock care he needs right now, I am having a tough time of it lately.

My dog Wulo is lying on a stack of six kennel mats covered by a sheet. He has two balls and is covered with a blanket. He is looking cute and hoping I have more snacks for him. -------- Wulo will be 15 in July. He has a serious heart issue and also a progressive neurological issue that we are unable to diagnose because of his heart. Since being diagnosed last July/August Wulo's quality of life has been very good. But as of February 14 a couple of things have happened where it appears the neurological issue is progressing. We are able to manage the symptoms for now and keep him happy and comfortable, but the changes just since February 14 have been dramatic. I am not sure how much time we have left together. I am trying to focus on the fact that we are doing everything we can for him and he is happy, comfortable, eating like a champ, sleeping really great, and enjoying being out in the sun, but it is really hard.

My old man #Stinkapus settling in for a post-breakfast snooze. Wednesday was rough for him but after a check up, tweak of his meds, & laser/acupuncture he is feeling really good today. #WuloTheOriginal is almost 15 now and every day is a gift. ♥️

My dog Wulo is lying on his bed (a stack of *6* kennel mats) under an old towel I use as a blanket for him. He had his breakfast and so now he is super happy, comfortable, and snoozy. ---------- On February 14 he had an episode I thought was related to his heart condition. The vet determined it was probably not heart related but strictly neurological. He recovered well, so there was nothing for it but to take a wait and see approach. But then he had another - more severe - episode on Wednesday. I took him back to the vet and based on the fact that the two events were 12 days apart and the second being more "classic" symptoms (but still mild) we have added a medication in the hope it slows the progression of the neurological issues he is having. Being close to 15 years old and having a serious heart condition, Wulo's comfort and happiness is our sole consideration. So after asking a lot of questions and receiving feedback that the medication has an extremely low incidence of side effects (drowsiness is really the only one), it made sense to add it. Fingers crossed it helps keep him feeling good.

Last Friday Wulo had an episode where it is clear his heart issue progressing again. True, he is definitely not ready to not be here. But, at what point does it become inhumane to see how low his heart rate can get? Watching them grow old is so hard.

My dog Wulo is standing in my kitchen, looking really cute and excited for treats. We have many rugs in different colors on our floor, which is tile. ----------- Wulo is almost 15 years old now. He has had a progressive heart condition since at least 2020, but it was just diagnosed in late July 2024. The only treatment is a pacemaker, which is not an appropriate option for him due to his age and other health conditions. So we have been on comfort care since July. He has done really well, we have been on a plateau for seven months now where his heart issue didn't really change. But he had an episode last Friday, and while he appeared to recover, a follow up with the vet his heart rate is now down to 35BPM, which is dangerously low for a dog his size/age. Honestly, it is astonishing how well he is doing and feeling with it being so low. No one understands how it is possible. There are difficult decisions ahead as we watch his happiness and comfort very closely, but it might become increasingly out of alignment with his heart losing function.

The dog on the right, #WuloTheOriginal, he is well over 14 now and we are day by day at this point. He is happy and comfortable and not in pain, and I will keep him there as long as I can. We have been here for six months now. Every day is a gift.

I'm here for it but it is hard watching them get old. #WuloTheOriginal overdid it and jumped off the dog couch (he is 14) and his back legs could not support him. He is not in pain, but I had to convince him to lie down so he would not panic. Fortunately he is comfortable now. ♥️

My dog Wulo is lying on his bed in my WFH office, sleeping comfortably. He is 14 with a very serious heart issue and neurological issues that make him very weak, especially in his back legs. We are doing comfort care and he is in no pain and is happy, but we have had a couple of minor incidents where he has fallen and has not been able to get back up. When that happens priority #1 is to comfort him so he does not panic, because with his heart issue that would make his heart rate slow down even more than it already is and could be fatal. I was able to pick him up and put him on his bed and convince him to lie down. I stayed on the floor with him until I could tell he was comfortable and then he took a nap.

This has been the greatest and most durable friendship of my life, through seismic life changes, marriages, divorces, children, spirited debates about electric vehicles, really great events, and really horrible ones too. This friendship has been a constant and one that has become more meaningful and important to me the older I am.

Honestly, naming him Wulo is some of my best work. He will be wherever I am, even when I am somewhere for just 2 minutes. I was all over the house today and at 14 he is too old for that but does it anyway. So now he is tired and settling in for a nap.♥️
