Visited sobering & tragic #Wybalenna (Flinders Isl): site of most deaths of #Aboriginal Tasmanians in custody (> 100 in ~ 2 yrs)

This is chief #Manakalina of the #truwulway of #lumaranatana, the only #Aboriginal person with a monument

Everyone else just dumped & graves pilfered for 'curiosities'

Wybalenna on Flinders Island.
He cut his hair and beard off, walked down onto the beach and sang his song. He died a week later.

Every tribal born Palawa was killed before the remaining 134 were incarcerated on Flinders Island at Wybalenna. My my great-great-great grandfather being the last, he died within two weeks. When only 47 were left they were transferred to a former army camp, considered too bad for army use at Oyster

#Hastie and his #RWNJ mates squawking #Trump like rhetoric, normalise this #racist behaviour. Sadly #MSM will never challenge this because they endorse the social change.

This is abhorrent, Wybalenna is a sacred site. Surely it would have to be easy to identify those responsible and hold them to account #politas
More than just a site, it’s a graveyard. 😡🖤💛💔

I walked today to the spot where JS Prout made his 1846 painting of Wybalenna on Flinders Island. You can see the chapel in the centre of both frames and Prime Seal Island across the water. A beautiful place that’s steeped in tragedy.

What do you expect when you have a state government that does not respect indigenous Tasmanians.

Congratulations to SBS journalist Kerrin Thomas, winner of the Feature, Documentary or Current Affairs award at the 2026 Tas Media Awards. Kerrin's SBS World News feature on the restoration and history of Wybalenna was praised by judges for its sensitivity, compassion and high-quality storytelling.

Like many, I've walked along numerous tracks in Tassie over decades. Visited Flinders Is a long time back, including Wybalenna. While the light in the skies of Tassie is bright, it is nevertheless stained with sorrow, in my eyes. It's up to non-Aboriginal people to heal themselves now.

✊🏾🖤💛❤️ Wybalenna, where my great great great grandfather was incarcerated and died 14 days later, buried in an unmarked grave.
