Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)

Cool new Exp382 study out in @natcomms.nature.com showing an extreme poleward shift of ACC during the last interglacial.
The coolest thing is that it confirms our 2024 results using fast and non-destructive XRF. 🤩

Currently having fun with folks who are very flustered with their new X-ray unit. I’m trying to calm them down a bit and it ain’t working.
Admittedly part of this review is going through their SOP line-by-line to see if someone with no experience can use it to operate the XRF.
The answer is no.

(Fragments of) medieval manuscripts were often re-used in bookbindings. MA-XRF scanning can penetrate the bindings without having to take them apart and so make long lost texts legible. One of the finds is a 12th century manuscript containing a text by early 8th-century English scholar Bede.

I sometimes take advantage of the analytical equipment at my real job. This is a Cambrian arthropod (probably not a Beckwithia) from the Wheeler shale of Utah. I used the XRF (X-ray fluorescence) to highlight iron and phosphorus. This is a 500 Ma digestive system.

I collaborated with our museum’s conservation team to do some p-XRF testing of a few of our suspicious-looking Victorian yellowbacks (the genre term, despite these being green 🤣) for the poison book project, and we’ve got arsenic! ☠️
