This week, I attended the 2024 XTBG-Nature Reserve Bureau meeting, focused on #bridging the gap between #researchers and #practicioners. Monitoring was a key theme, and we shared our work on #acoustic monitoring. Such initiatives are essential for aligning research with practical conservation needs!

Mountain building and climate cooling over the past 30 million years have been identified as key drivers shaping the rich plant diversity and distinct evolutionary patterns found in alpine regions worldwide. doi.org/hbgbpf
How mountain building and climate change have shaped alpine biodiversity over 30 million years
In a study published in Science Advances on December 19, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, along with collaborators from international institutions, explored the impact of mountain building and climate cooling over 30 million years across five major mountain systems in the Northern Hemisphere and revealed that these processes are key drivers of the rich plant diversity found in Earth's alpine biome.

In 2003, China planted small islands of native trees along a degraded river; 20 years later they held only 19-30% of an intact forest's diversity and biomass
Tropical forests have been heavily degraded because of human activities. (Representational photo) Planting trees across vast areas may not be the only way to restore damaged tropical forests, according to a new study. Instead, small patches of native trees can gradually help degraded forests recover. The study was carried out by Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was published in the journal Restoration Ecology. The study of 20 years examined the long-term results of a restoration method called applied nucleation. The method involves planting small groups of native trees on a degraded tropical riparian corridor in southwest China. Riparian corridors are strips of land along rivers and streams. These areas are important because they support wildlife, protect water quality and connect different forest habitats. The researchers wanted to know whether small tree patches could help such damaged forests recover over many years. The approach worked in rebuilding forest cover and structure. However, restoring a tropical forest is a slow process. Even after two decades, the recovering forest was still in an early stage of development. It had not regained the diversity or biomass of a nearby natural forest. Tropical forest restoration matters Tropical forests...
