Is there a good piece to assign on this? Preferably with some historical context? I start my class with the Xiaoice/Tey example and would love to follow it up with something contemporary.

I counterpose Xiaoice and Tay in my course. I believe Tay was released because Xiaoice was so successful. It's a good way to get into the social embeddedness of technology.

tbh Sydney and Grok are more similar to each other (both LLMs likely made more insane by their system prompts) than Tay (I couldn't find what exactly it was, but it couldn't have been a transformer, and Chinese Microsoft made Xiaoice a little earlier, which was a RNN with a RAG of sorts)

Up there with Microsoft's Tay. The wikipedia page now specifically references Grok

10th anniversary. Good night, sweet princess.

I couldn't find any official info about what was Tay made of, but circumstantial evidence points to XiaoIce (made my Chinese branch of Microsoft in 2014): arxiv.org/pdf/1812.08989

There is of course a much larger social stigma around mental health in china, and AI chat bots had a huge media back in 2017(!) look up the Xiaoice “Suicide Prevention” moment. they also had a huge data breach in 2020.

Which is why things are a bit further a long.

Ugh. Here’s your regular reminder that Chinese has extremely strict language rules and is much easier to glean context out of than English.

Another reminder: China has XiaoIce thanks to Microsoft - Microsoft let go of that tech.

In my 2017 book Re-engineering Retail, I share a story about how millions Chinese teens were, at the time, “befriending” and sharing intimate life moments with an AI influencer called Xiaoice. For many, it seemed dystopian.

6 years later human+AI relationships are mainstreaming.

Huawei has announced the world’s first commercial deployment of its EcoMatrix minimalist base station, completed in partnership with Peruvian telecom operator Claro. The EcoMatrix solution is a highly integrated base station capable of consolidating multiple Sub-3GHz frequency bands—such as 700 MHz and 850 MHz—into a single pole-mounted unit. According to Huawei, the deployment reduced the number of site devices from 15 to just 3, saving approximately 30% of rooftop space.
