You wouldn’t believe how many African languages we found over time that had some variant of “ananas” for the word for “Pineapple”. Here are two languages that have a purely native name for the word: Xihenge and Àbarbá for #XiTsonga and #Hausa respectively!

The founding provisions of South Africa’s constitution recognise 12 official languages: Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu and, since 2023, South African Sign Language or SASL.
