A girl likes to have fun. Another doesn’t. One is looked down upon; the other admired. Can you guess which one? The legend of xtabentun, a #flower that is now used for making liquor has lots of #drama.

I finally found Xtabentún in Seattle!!!!!!!
September 25, 2025 at 11:01 PM
I was prompted to order a milkshake (frappe) by the group chat, so I hit up J.P. Licks, apparently just in time to try one of their new flavours

I got the Xtabentún Coffee, with coconut milk, and it's absolutely delicious once I got into the distinctive taste!

Xtabentún

What is it? An anise flavored, honey based liqueur from Yucatan of "Mayan" origin.

Saw it and bought it on a whim. Unfortunately, haven't found it locally since then.

Did find the brand I bought online.

Casa D'Aristi Xta Liqueur (in a blue bottle)

Price seems to vary - $28 to $199 🙃.

Johnny Walker Black, Xtabentun, Licor 43, rice caramel syrup, orange bitters
Xtabentun: Mayan liqueur made from rum, honey, anise
Licor 43: Spanish liqueur heavy on orange and vanilla
Rice caramel syrup: go to newboozedaily on Instagram to see how I made it.

Annnnnnnnnnd I've found the anise drink from México. Never thought I would say this. What in the holy fucking wow. This is absolutely beyond incredible.

It's called Xtabentun, and it's literally just made of fermented honey with anise added in the fermentation process.

I am. In love. And addicted.

Never even heard of xtabentun. Only been once (I think it was the food crawl), I'll have to go back.

Although "hose margarita" is giving me unfortunate flashbacks to certain parties in college

The Sol Maya is lovely—a mix of mezcal, xtabentun, and lemon. Refreshing and balanced. A steal at $8 and an insane one at $4. The margarita was a little heavy on the citrus for my taste but utterly massive. I was one and done.

Husband Unit just brought me up to speed on that. Apparently they didn’t use a recall but just stopped selling them?

I think the Xtabentún bottle is still in Mexico but not exported. We remember this limited edition bottle but I don’t know if they still make it.

I miss the old faux-stone Xtabentún bottle.

"Centuries back, native Mayans produced a drink from the nectar of the local Xtabentún flower. Today, the liqueur of the same name starts from a base of honey produced from that flower; the honey is fermented, then combined with Mexican rum and anisette."
