King Alfred's Cakes seen in Fore Wood, Crowhurst, East Sussex - so called because of the legend that Alfred was dreaming and let the hearth bake overcook. However, these black lumps also know as coal fungus, carbon fungus & cramp balls, have the scientific name: Daldinia concentrica (Xylariaceae).
