Na Grécia, no sul da ilha de Chios, a vila de Pyrgi ficou conhecida como a “cidade pintada”. O apelido vem das fachadas cobertas por desenhos geométricos em preto e branco, que transformaram o histórico conjunto urbano em um cenário arquitetônico singular. O padrão decorativo é chamado de “xysta”, técnica aplicada diretamente sobre o reboco das casas. O processo consiste em cobrir a parede com uma camada escura e, em seguida, raspar a superfície para revelar o tom claro inferior, formando losangos, espirais e e outros padrões gráficos. A repetição criou uma identidade visual contínua que define a região. Na vila de Pyrgi, na Grécia, a técnica xysta cobre as casas com padrões geométricos em preto e branco. É um dos conjuntos mais singulares da arquitetura medieval mediterrânea Eva-tzi/Wikimedia Commons Alguns historiadores acreditam que esses padrões são resultado da influência otomana, imitando os tapetes kilim trazidos de Constantinopla no século 19. Outros afirmam que datam de um período muito anterior, quando a ilha estava sob domínio genovês – entre o século 14 e o século 16. Em Pyrgi, o padrão geométrico aplicado sobre o reboco preserva uma tradição de design que atravessa séculos Petille/WikimediaCommons Em Pyrgi, as construções são geminadas e organizadas em ruas estreitas, característica das vilas medievais do Mediterrâneo. Nesse contexto urbano compacto, o revestimento gráfico passou a funcionar como elemento de distinção. Os mais antigo exemplos de xysta que sobreviveram datam de cerca de 1850 e consistem em repetições relativamente simples de triângulos, losangos e semicírculos Eva-tzi/Wikimedia Commons Com cerca de mil habitantes, a vila mantém a aplicação e a restauração periódica da “xysta”, preservando uma tradição decorativa que atravessa séculos.
