deeply fucked to watch yimby’s voluntarily choose to become the thing their dumbest critics accused them of being

Open thread: what should be on California YIMBY's 2025 legislative agenda?

Smart thread from California YIMBY’s digital director:
I see we're doing Bluesky/Twitter discourse again. My thoughts in this 🧵 from personal and professional experience:

1. If your goal is to reach normies, neither place is useful. You reach normies on video, especially Instagram and YouTube right now. Less so TikTok at the moment.

(I am talking about Yimby’s, not abundance)

Congratulations to California YIMBY's own Maiya De La Rosa on her election as President of the California Young Democrats!

isn’t this the group with that posh British girl in the “Yimby’s are gentrifiers” tiktok
May 21, 2025 at 1:54 PM
look, i just don’t think Yimby’s should associate with these guys if they ever want to be relevant in democratic politics again. this was a coming out party, the next conference is just gonna be a stormfront printout
There's a increasingly wide gulf between what you might call "local abundance"—which largely consists of liberal and progressive activists and local electeds trying to do YIMBY-type things—and "DC abundance," which hosts conferences where Oren Cass is a speaker for some reason.

In this thread, I'll be sharing California YIMBY's 2025 legislative package. We are supporting an excellent group in legislators in running one of the most ambitious pro-housing agendas in California history—and this is only the beginning.

are there any data center YIMBY's

If the criticism was that Yimby’s don’t care about people’s actual communities I think it’s a bad idea to respond to said criticism by then aligning with the people who are literally poisoning the communities people claimed Yimby’s don’t care about.

I’m begging yimby’s not to take this bait
Musk: "The sheer number of permits to build a house" in Los Angeles means that "it's basically illegal."
February 3, 2025 at 6:02 AM
"using DSA to do counterinsurgency"

what

while i wish yimby’s a totalizing political victory, i also hope it doesn’t discourage nimby’s from producing content

I'm living rent free in your head...thanks to a citywide upzoning of heads and limiting environmental review of head infill. Thank you, local head YIMBY's!

Seeing the YIMBY’s turn on Ezra Klein has given me such a feeling of hope

yeah, the thing with the abundance guys is that whatever their stated policy preferences are, they’ve allied with the “houston exurban growth” Yimby’s and that is a movement which will collapse in on itself.
YIMBY also literally does not work without big investments in public transit. Going on podcasts talking about abandoning High Speed Rail (in spite of overwhelming CA voter approval of the project!) actively undermines any “abundance” project.

It’s clear these pundits are focused on settling scores.
This is part of what drives me nuts about the trajectory of the abundance conversation. It is entirely intuitive to link a major building and infrastructure program with a sort of left-populist, antifascist politics. It’s actually necessary! Also, FDR did it already!

SB 79 has been in effect for a month now, so I wrote my take on how implementation is going. Pretty well, I think! But there are some important tests coming for HCD
