“Bass” is an installation that McQueen created in 2024 featuring music focused on the low-end frequency of the double bass, with colored lights. It was inspired in part by the Middle Passage and sound in the hold of a ship.

“It’s about how sound is a liberation, in a way, to all of us.” #YUAlchemy

"Nobody remembers the evening she and her friends raised hell on 132nd Street or turned out Edmund’s Cellar or made such a beautiful noise during the riot that their screams and shouts were improvised music…
a jazz chorus."

The 4th #YUAlchemy Lecture will be available for 2 weeks.

I highly recommend listening, and listening again. 😌📚

I'm also rereading the very first Lectures on "Borders…", esp. architect Dele Adeyemo's essay Thinking how arch. & infrastructures can condition sound.

Remember, Duke sale is on.

I'm thinking about sound and healing. #YUAlchemy

Artist Guadalupe Maravilla's 20 foot "Disease Thrower" sculpture is based on indigenous healing traditions.

It has a mat to lie down inside and a gong that can be struck for vibrational healing.

He made a bus too with a gong on the front.
If you see this u have to post a picture from your phone & don’t explain it.

"The catalog of bridges is a palimpsest...."

I was thinking about Firelei Báez's work, which is also, often, a palimpsest.

the D'Angelo clip 😣

such a loss

"the blues is the nucleus of everything"

So grateful for these remarks by Ola Mohammed.

The 4th Alchemy Lecture is really resonating with me (pun intended).

The theme, Sound—at the Interregnum, is related to one of my key words for this year. I've been focusing and reading about sound and listening, ways of listening, etc.

So grateful for it.

Listening is one of my key words for the year.

“really listening, when it goes bone-deep into the sunken ark of bones, is something other than itself. It doesn’t alternate with but is seeing; it’s the sense that it excludes; it’s the ensemble of senses”
- Fred Moten, In the Break
Just got the audiobook, "Third Ear" by Elizabeth Rosner!

"Rosner shares stories from growing up in a home where six languages were spoken to interrogate how psychotherapy neurolinguistics, and creativity can illuminate the complex ways we are impacted by the sounds and silences of others." #LangSky

"The performance is all process, excess, labor…"

"the practice room as a heightened spiritual state"

"scores as visual works, as musical propositions, as suggestion of a direction"

"Black music as fugitive resonance"

"western notation can't hold Black music"

Madeleine Thien's reading and meditation on the work of Mahmoud Darwish's poems is devastating and beautiful.

So grateful and heartbroken.
