a cellular framework for conceptualizing Community

4/8
"behold, a community". beneath this text is a diagram of concentric circles, labeled A. an outer membrane B. an inner observational ring. C. a secondary membrane. D. the delicious goo. E. a nucleas "each of these has a function which regulates the community". "the outer membrane is the cell wall, and represents the boundaries of the community." a diagram shows a little dot representing a prospective participant, excitedly asking to be let in. "not everyone can participate in a community. a community about Knitting does not want participants who believe Knitting must be destroyed. it can sustain a small threshold of these participants provided they contribute value to the community. to that end, the outer membrane acts as a filter. to pass through the membrane, a participant must be formatted and tested. to continue with our Knitting example, this may require the participant to demonstrate an interest in Knitting. achieving this, they may pass through the outer membrane. most outer membranes are permeable, but not all are." side notes explain that some communities do not recruit participants, but instead participants are born already inside. another note explains that demonstrating an interest in Knitting might mean buying knitting supplies, occupying Knitting spaces, or contributing to the success of someone who Knits. the inner observational ring is where potential participants are formatted and adopt "community values". the diagram below shows a prospective participant on the inner ring commenting "let's see what this is all about", while a dot inside the second membrane comments "pearl 2 my brother! let me tell you why knitting is WEAVE!" communities form around "values" and are shaped by "values". "knitting is good" is a value, and notably it is not a static value. the definitions for "knitting", "is", and "good" vary between participants and may change over long periods of time in response to changes in the substrate that the community exists in. (a side note explains that a substrate is a material that something grows in.) however, with enough participants a vague but sustained shape begins to form around the varied interpretations of these values. this shape is visible to participants, but only inside the delicious goo. (another side note indicates that communities, as living things, can also die. one condition for death is having the delicious goo leak, as values break down outside of the boundaries of the community. the author recommends you read umineko to understand.) this creatures a relationship of tension and dependency between the value and the participants. they must adopt the value to participate, but they also shape the value through approximate consensus. the inner observational ring is where participants can learn about and adopt these values through limited exchange with participants through a thin membrane. failing or rejecting this, the prospective participant can exit. the delicious goo is the experience of community. you now know the rituals and language and values, and perform them with other members. a diagram depicts the participant now in the goo, saying "WEAVE YEAH! i'm a real yarnboy now!" another participant comments "ugh, all you yarnboys are the same." the community lives while it sustains a threshold of active participants. these participants want the community to sustain itself, and as such are incentivized to participate and recruit. through this process, the community sustains itself or grows. it replaces participants which leave or die, or attempts to grow larger. (there is an asterisk over "leave", but it does not seem to refer to any side note, making the author question why he put that there.) from the delicious goo you can view the nucleas. the nucleas is comprised of symbols, stories, events, and celebrities. these are means by which the community reproduces its values among the constituent participants. (the author notes that he has been spelling nucleas wrong the entire time, but is in too deep now to turn back.) celebrity participants are those who best exemplify the values of the community, but they are not exempt from expulsion if they demonstrate a betrayal of these values. failure to do so results in corrupted values, and community schisms.
