"Yellowface" hat mir ausnehmend gut gefallen und mir nachhaltig Nachdenkstoff beschert. Wer sich mit Rassismus, Buchmarkt und Sensitivity Reading beschäftigen möchte, sollte hier unbedingt zugreifen!

Whatever else unbiased history has to say, he didn't deserve yellowface John Wayne.

161) Yellowface by R.F Kuang

I did enjoy this book! I get why some find it heavy handed - it definitely is, but that didn’t detract for me (listening on 1.5x speed while working)

I really liked it! It was a verrrrry engaging read and I couldn’t put it down!

If you’ve read Yellowface by RF Kuang and liked it, you’ll love this one

The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932) The diabolical criminal mastermind seeks to steal the newfound artifacts from the tomb of Genghis Khan from it's rightful owners, The British Museum, in his quest to kill all whitey. Lots of torture devices and Boris Karloff and Myrna Loy in yellowface.

The new book "Feeling Yellow: Asian Americans and Yellowface in Twenty-First-Century Musical Theatre" by Donatella Galella spotlights Asian American affect, artistry, and activism. Read it in open access at doi.org/10.3998/mpub...

A standout new title out today: "Feeling Yellow"
Donatella Galella exposes how yellowface persists in contemporary musical theatre and how Asian American artists challenge it. This is a powerful study of racism, representation, and belonging on the US stage.

It was so fun! Did you read Yellowface by RF Kuang? It was similar energy!

It's a movie I can never quite shake off loving, even if I know the yellowface is a bit obviously iff and the books it's based on are queasy schlock.

Should have had way more Fred Ward starring roles. World was robbed.

A happy reading report: I just finished R. F. Kuang's Taipei Story and I loved it. Rich, funny, moving, and I suspect it will be all the more so for anyone who has the kind of relationship to a heritage language that Kuang's protagonist does.

Bei Yellowface fand ich am stärksten, dass June bis zum Schluss überzeugt ist, im Recht zu sein. Kuang lässt einen nie aus diesem Kopf heraus, und man ertappt sich dabei, ihr für einen Moment zuzustimmen.

Patrick Stewart had "Oriental looking" eyes by 20th century anglo American norms. Those long eyes like an Egyptian God.

This made him a fit for yellowface origin theater roles like Fairy King Oberon in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. Stewart would've been a great Dracula, Fu Manchu, or Sith.

Finished “Taipei Story” by Rebecca F Kuang. We’re heading to Taiwan next year so it was a good insight into Taipei and life there, and the language (which I’m learning a little). A good read - if a bit of a tough time for Lily the protagonist.

He considered the height of his career to be when he was loaned out to MGM in 1944 to play Katherine Hepburn’s husband in DRAGON SEED, a follow-up to THE GOOD EARTH starring only Caucasian actors in “yellowface” Asian roles. Despite a stellar cast, the film was not a success. #TheNoirCollective

I look forward to your thoughts on it.

I enjoyed Yellowface (but also I'm bias because I'm from DC, so I thought the DC references were hilarious). Babel is my favorite even though it took me a while to get into.

In some respects, Murder By Death has not aged well, but I think everyone understood even then that the yellowface was dumb and bad, but went along with it because Neil Simon wrote it and the cast was so stacked.
