Interesting plaque on the NIGPAS building! My hero Johan Gunnar Andersson studied the Yinxu Oracle bones - so he probably visted when he was last in town in 1937 😀

I can find no semantic connection in older sources between wáng 王 and axes.
AFAIK, It’s only ever meant “ruler” or “to claim rulership (a la 春秋 etc).”
