thancred (and ysthola, she is JUST as bad) "dying" in the last ARR patch would have mattered to the player. same with shb!
the original scions aren't front and center anymore (save the twins) and we are getting New People (Raha, Krile, etc) and that's good!

Honestly I prefer her than the ur dragon and Edgar 🤷♂️ at least I cam see someone being like "oh this is ysthola but artifacts" or "every cards mana value is a 4 for 14".
Ur dragon is just all the best dragons and Edgar is all the good vampires.

see this fascinates me endlessly it feels like the two are inverted, Ive never seen someone enjoy a ysthola deck but the well of diversity is (well, middling but) it exists
Meanwhile I see ppl enjoy ur-dragon decks (I dont enjoy them, but i do *see* it) but theyre a copy paste of the same 30~ cards

I mean is it tho? Like Yshtola is good but its just esper slop. People complain about landfall “rewarding you for playing the game normally” but smth like 60% of esper decks just say “draw a card when you do my special bullshit” Ysthola is just the most generic form of it.

If I leave my mark on this game, I should hope that that is I hate every esper cmdr and is just a different flavor of "do my special thing, draw a card" even on cool designs they sneak it in, like Jin getting double strike drawing two cards, but so so many new ones just have card draw and no spice

scions that Do Not Fucking Like him are alisae ysthola and tataru scions that dont like him (less intense) are thancred and alphinaud but i think lyse doesnt mind him i think they could be friends . estinien and cathal do not register that theyre friends bc theyer never in the same place long enough

To me a black standout is "willing to sacrifice" and the only thing ysthola has proven to sacrifice is her own health/life so maybe. But not others.
Actually Urianger has a greater claim to black than any other scion if you ask me.

Is ysthola even better? Instead of a pile of dragon its just value. I guess its open to more play patterns but it still doesn't feel like a super inspired design.

Yes! At my own pace, I can read notes lore and well the NPC teaches me the mechanics most of the time 😆( except Ysthola, she is doing her best)
FFXIV can sometimes be chaotic and friendly lol, it's an art knowing how to navigate through it.
