Yudhishtira - 3 star - Servant class: Ruler

Yudhishthira is the eldest among the five Pandavas, and is also one of the central characters of the epic Mahabharata. He was the leader of the successful Pandava faction in the Kurukshetra War and defeated many venerable warriors.

Okay but Yudhishthira was blameless and was even loyal to a dog

In the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira refused to go to heaven where his family awaited him unless he could take his dog with him. Priorities.

In the Indian epic Mahabharata, Yudhishthira arrives at the gates of heaven with a loyal dog by his side. When asked to abandon the animal, he refuses, proving that love and loyalty outweigh even paradise. #mythologymonday

As Yudhishthira regained his kingdom after his exile, Bangkok still carries whispers of righteous divinity.

The test of compassion #INDRA says: “You may enter. But the dog must stay behind.” #Yudhishthira refuses. “I do not want that Paradise which has no place for the dog who trusted me and followed me.” That moment? Divine revelation.

In the Sanskrit epic The Mahābhārata, five demigod brothers are challenged to a game of pachisi by their envious cousin. Yudhishthira, the brother who plays the game, gambles his wealth, his kingdom, his brothers, his wife, and his own freedom, and loses them all. #MythologyMonday

Campbell talked about the feet off the ground, and so did Graves in the White Goddess (who posited a sacred wounding/disablement) and Frazer in the Golden Bough. There's also a moment in the Mahabharata when Yudhishthira lies about Ashwattaman, his chariot sinks to the ground.

see also Yudhishthira and his dog upon his ascent to heaven - the dog was devoted to him, so he could not cast it away, even if it would cost him heaven. And it wasn't even a lifelong companion, it was kind of recent! also coincidentally book 17 of the Mahabharata.

Yudhishthira in the Mahabharata:
March 31, 2025 at 5:26 PM
Yudhishthira was asked what was the greatest wonder in the world. He replied that every day, although countless human beings see people die, yet those who remain alive behave as if they will live forever.

The characters are outstandingly deep and alive.

Kunti, Yudhishthira, Karna... It took centuries to have Shakespeare and Tolstoy show us comparable genius...

Question: What is truly amazing in this world?

Yudhishthira: The most amazing thing is, though humans are mortal, everybody goes about their life as if they are going to be here forever.

True story, a major point of the Hindu Mahabharata is that refusing to compromise your principles in service to doing the right thing is actually wrong. The story sets up a situation where Yudhishthira, who is honest, must lie in service to winning a just war. He does it, very reluctantly. 1/9

Not Christian theology, but If you're familiar with the Mahabharata when Yudhishthira when at the end of his journey ascending to heaven he is accompanied by a dog. He is told that he may enter heaven but the dog cannot come, he argues that because the dog is his loyal companion it should come, but

He is the Morning Star after all

Mit(h)ra's various incarnations across cultures are both varied but also strangely consistent

I also like the view that some archaic figures of myth like Menelaus and Yudhishthira embody him but in a terrestrial sphere

He doesn’t know where it’s from because of the lack of other context clues, but he said it doesn’t necessarily need to be the Mahabharata just because Yudhishthira is mentioned. I hope you are able to classify it correctly though! 😊
