Yugonostalgia is funny because people who want Tito to come back are usually people who lament the loss of brotherhood and unity among South Slavs, who regret the violent divisions and genocide and meanwhile the Stalinists are just 'Stalin didn't kill enough'.

There was a Yugonostalgia bar in NYC that had to close after there was an ethnically motivated stabbing during a brawl between Bosnian and Serb guys after one of the Serbs did a three-finger salute.

Yugonostalgia is its own political sentiment that people have, it's certainly not good but also the person saying this and being SPS is a rarity. A lot of, probably /most/ hardline Serbian nationalists themselves think Yugoslavia was a mistake and a Communist plot to kill all Serbs

Copying Western craziness is more of a right thing in Serbia, the standard nat narrative is accepted by too many lefties so they sound like patient 0, but it's interesting how little yugonostalgia there is given we were the most successful ostblok state by a long one

This is also this really unique nostalgic that’s culturally linked to exile and diasporadic populations. For example, Yugonostalgia, the nostalgia for a state that longer is, in the Balkan states.

You can resist critiques of Yugoslavia/Yugonostalgia all you want. Even my mother had happy moments within a system that systematically displaced her family and deprived her of opportunities. Similarly, marginalised people in the West also experience happy moments.

Culturally, the Balkans seem uniquely unfavorable. Too peripheral for the metropolitan big bucks/prestige but Euro enough for aspiration to whiteness, conceptually stuck in Yugonostalgia/'remembrance', democratic enough to induce dullness but not authoritarian enough to produce life-or-death work...

This is where "Yugonostalgia" enters the conversation. Yugonostalgia often claims that "everything was fine" under Yugoslavia, but that wasn’t the case. Unfortunately, it is primarily driven by a privileged majority who insist on this narrative.
