The famed novelist Kawabata Yasunari (川端康成 1899-1972) wrote the book 'Sound of the Mountain' (山の音 'Yama-no-oto' 1949-54) at Yūsai-tei (祐斎亭). It's not difficult to see why he was inspired to write whilst staying here.

The 150-year old Yūsai-tei (祐斎亭) overlooks the Ōi-gawa (大堰川) in Arashiyama.
Once a 'ryōri ryokan' (料理旅館), a traditional inn priding itself on its cuisine, the buildings are now a workshop and exhibition space for 'yume kōro' dyeing (夢こうろ染).

Yusai-tei is a popular spot for viewing the fresh green maple leaves and late autumn colours. Its sitting room round windows are particularly photogenic. After the rain the moss and autumn colours at Yusai-tei look particularly gorgeous. Windows in teh shoji doors give tantalizing glimpses of autumn colours beyond. Autumn colours are reflected in the polished surface of a table at Yusai-tei.
