#Zapotecs
the toltecs and olmecs are extinct but the huastecs, mixtecs, and zapotecs call themselves "téenek", some variant of "ñuudzahui"/"ñuù savi"/"nayivi davi"/etc, and "bën za" respectively :)

Do we want to talk about uncomfortable things?

How the Zapotecs allied with the Spanish against the oppressive Aztecs?

How Ming imperial courts were filled with blood soaked South American Silver?

*Why* the Europeans started importing African slaves?

'the #Mayans, the #Zapotecs, the #Mixtecs, the #Purepechas'

#Tenochtitlan, therefore, was and continues to be a symbol of that profound, ancient, and resilient Mexico...

Long live Tenochtitlan
Long live Mexico"..‼️

I’m also thinking of all those global places where people from one valley to the next have wildly different languages and can barely understand each other (Oaxaca still has that going on with the Zapotecs as just one example)

These are actually two gods together: Pitao Cozobi, the Zapotec god of corn and abundance, and Pitao Cocijo, the god of rain and lightning. They are often depicted together because Zapotecs understood rainfall was essential for corn to grow.

i would easily enjoy another gritty, realist indigenous film. flower wars, something about the Zapotecs, etc

My local library only had three or four Nancy Drew books when I grew up, but they were wonderful ways of expanding my horizon. It was thanks to one of them that I learned about the Zapotecs, for instance. I must have been around 11.

Chaahk, god of rain. This effigy vessel dates from the Late Postclassic period (1200–1550), from the Mayapán region of Yucatán. Each culture had its own rain god with its own names, such as Chaahk (Maya); Cocijo (Zapotecs); Tláloc (Mexica); Dzavui (Mixtecs); and Teotihuacans, (original name unknown)

Yes, the Aztecs, Toltecs, Zapotecs, Mixtecs, Olmecs (probably) and others. In Oaxaca, it tends to not be viscous at all, and they often serve it partly fermented, so it's a little sweet naturally.

AI ass map doesn’t list the Zapotecs

"Officials were clued into the tomb’s location by an anonymous report of looting at the site, per Live Science. Oaxaca is the native land of the Zapotecs—also called the “Cloud People”—a pre-Hispanic population who have lived among its highlands and valleys since the sixth century B.C.E."

The tzdb is such a fantastic resource for humanity's historic interactions with the concept of time

> "# When Mexican clocks were turned back for daylight saving time in the spring, the Zapotecs refused to make the adjustment, insisting that they live in 'God's time,'"

But this is 13 × 144,000 days later: that is, roughly 5,094 years after 32 BC! Far in the future!

So, while 32 BC seemed early for the Olmecs to carve this stone, there’s no way they could have done it later. (Or earlier, for that matter.)

I have been thinking about this since you first posted, and it would be interesting to see how it would work in countries in Latin America where mestizaje was so common. There are still a few native people like Mayans and Zapotecs in Mexico living on their native lands but not owning them.

México mágico! Oaxaca was the birthplace of two great indigenous cultures: the Zapotecs, who constructed the city of Monte Albán, and the Mixtecs, with great artistic sensitivity whose history was etched in the famous códices. The artifact below is in the Museum of Cultures of Oaxaca, Santo Domingo

Of course they are. I was just wondering why SJP exempts Mexico from "settler-colonist" status (no Zapotecs in SJP, I guess) or why they would care if two settler-colonist countries invaded each other.

💀 According to local legend, the Zapotecs, an ancient indigenous society, created a network of tunnels around a naturally formed cavern that they believed to be the entrance to the underworld. They called this labyrinth “Lyobaa”, which means “place of rest”.
