The Mint's forerunner, the Zōheiryō, lit its lamps on surplus gas and drew crowds as Japan's first street lights.

造幣局 (zōheikyoku) is the Mint, where a nation stamps its coins. So why is the character for "money" built around a strip of cloth?

Break the word into three. 造 (zō), to make. 幣 (hei), money, currency. 局 (kyoku), a bureau. Together: the currency-making bureau, the Mint.
