Blosc2 bitshuffle + Zstd-5 beats us on speed (approximately double encode and decode), but produces files about a third larger. Nevertheless, if speed is the ultimate concern, this is probably the way to go.

While working on our new monitoring tool for Redis, we noticed quite big keys occupying half of the available cache memory. Turns out to be the full page cache, containing raw, uncompressed HTML. Full write up and how we’ve fix it - boring-observability.dev/blog/laravel...
Laravel Full-Page Cache: Compressing Redis Entries — Skyline
Full-page cache entries in Redis can reach megabytes. Compare predis and phpredis, enable phpredis zstd compression, or compress in a serializer on predis.

one interesting thing i've been thinking about is how general-purpose compression algorithms like gzip or zstd will compress the same object better when it's json compared to something binary like msgpack,

Currently the LZ4 code in the kernel is a fork of upstream code that hasn't been updated since 2017~2018. Since then the LZ4 upstream code has seen bug fixes as well as performance optimizations: Linux Kernel's LZ4 Compression Code Being Resynced For Better Performance & Cleanliness buff.ly/TyDaA0J

In addition to the Linux kernel's Zstd compression code being improved, the LZ4 compression code within the kernel tree is also seeing a separate set of enhancements.

using golang + generated assembly using Avo, we now decompress 4% faster than yann collet's reference libzstd implementation!

Neoverse N1: Go now beats C on 5 of the 8 files: nyc-taxi 147%, gob 113%, github-ranks 107%, apache 104%.
