The movie, overall, seems like a Leftish statement, but there's the unfortunate Right-wing myth of "The Spat-Upon Returning Soldier by the antiwar protesters." he shouts when breaking-down with his old CO.
I still hear this today.

![Debunking A Myth
By John Zutz (Reviewer)
Fall 1998 Edition of "The Veteran" [an antiwar newspaper created by and for veterans, originally Vietnam Veterans, but it's continuing today.]
The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam, by Jerry Lembcke (New York University Press, 1998)
Many Vietnam veterans repeat a common litany: anti-war protesters spit upon them. This book attempts to debunk what Lembcke concludes has become a modern urban myth.
How does one attempt to prove a negative - that something didn't happen? This author does it by examining the positive side and failing to find any conclusive proof that it occurred. Along the way he finds many indications that it is indeed a myth.
His research examined newspapers from New York and San Francisco, as well as police reports detailing the interaction between protesters and veterans. No spitting incidents were reported, and the observers noticed that over time the veterans assumed leadership positions among the protesters. Lembcke did find newspaper reports of spitting during demonstrations in the late 1960s, but they referred to hawks spitting on anti-war protesters.
Reinforcing his myth hypothesis, Lembcke cites a Harris poll reported to Congress in 1972 that indicates 93% of returning veterans found their homecoming friendly, while only 3% found it unfriendly. The poll also reported that over 75% of returning vets were opposed to the war.
The first documented reports of being spit upon don't begin to appear until the early 1980s. According to the author, who is currently an associate professor of sociology, the time delay is a strong indication that the story is a myth. So where did the myth come from?

The Myth of the Spat-Upon Soldier

[The cover image is from the 12 October, 1968 march by GIs for Peace, front and center is who was then, an active-duty Navy Nurse Lt. Susan Schnall. She was later court-martialed, and run out of the Navy for speaking-out while on active-duty, and while in uniform.]
Growing up in the late twentieth-century United States I, like many others, was taught that protestors against the Vietnam war spat on American soldiers when they returned home from the war. When I got older and studied history more thoroughly I discovered that I had been taught a myth. That spitting did not happen. There were no news reports or other accounts of it happening - not one, not even from the most ardent supporters of the war - during the war. There were newspaper reports of pro-war counter-demonstrators occasionally spitting on anti-war protesters, but that's the closest you'll get. All allegations of protestors spitting on returning soldiers were made after the war was over. The myth originated in movies a few years after the end of the war, and reached the height of its popularity in the early 1990s when politicians used it to justify the first Iraq war.

![Spat-On Veterans: An Enduring Myth by Jerry Lembke
March 14, 2023
[Image shows earlier books by Lembke: "Dissenting POWs", and "The Spitting Image", with the title of this article at NYU]
In May, 2012, the Obama Administration announced a project to commemorate the U.S. war in Vietnam. The project, funded by Congress for $65 million and administered by the Department of Defense, extended across the years 2012 to 2025, comprising a set of 50th anniversary events. The President announced his project at the Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., indicating that veterans themselves, not the war, would be the focus of the commemorations. Speaking to the cameras, the President called the Vietnam War “one of the nation’s most painful chapters.” He said the treatment of Vietnam veterans “…was a national shame, a disgrace that should have never happened” and promised that “we’re here today to see that it doesn’t happen again.”
