Apple announced a new iPad and iPhone today; the budget _iPhone 17e_ and an updated _iPad Air_, both upgrades to models released last year. The devices are each available for preorder on March 4 and will go up for sale on March 11. The iPhone 17e gets some key upgrades over the 16e that came before it, including the addition of MagSafe wireless charging at 15W – the 16e had wireless charging but no magnets, and topped out at 7.5W – and a new pink color (joining the black and white of last year’s model). The phone also gets an upgraded version of Apple’s in-house designed C1 cellular modem, this time called the C1X. Otherwise, the iPhone 17e is a spec bump, with an A19 chip instead of A18, and double the entry-level storage at 256GB. That's not a bad thing, though; internally, the 17e will be very similar to the iPhone 17, which we think is the best iPhone for most people. The black glass on the cameras protrudes a bit more too." He also says the camera plateau itself is "a bit thicker" than on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and he provided the above image for comparison. The Telephoto lens in the iPhone 18 Pro models could also feature a larger aperture, allowing for more light in poor lighting conditions. At least one of the iPhone 18 Pro models could also feature a new three-layer stacked image sensor developed by Samsung. The advanced image sensor would make the camera more responsive, plus it could cut down on noise, increase dynamic range, and more. Will any of these upgrades necessitate a larger camera module? Theoretically, but no leak has explicitly said the lenses on either 18 Pro model will stick out more or that the camera plateau will get thicker. It's especially surprising given that the industry is actively targeting flat or near-flush camera systems in future devices, but Apple could well be taking a different tack. British fintech company Curve has launched contactless payments for iPhone users in the European Union, becoming the second third-party payment service after PayPal to take advantage of Apple's newly opened NFC interface (via _iphone-ticker.de_). The Curve Pay app allows users to make tap-to-pay purchases without using Apple Pay or the Wallet app, following PayPal's debut of similar functionality in Germany earlier this month. For comparison, the current iPhone 16 Pro measures 8.25mm thick. Achieving this level of thinness is unlikely to come without compromise. Dummy models shared by _AppleTrack_ suggest that Apple has made some subtle adjustments to accommodate internal components in the tighter chassis. Most notably, the USB-C port on the bottom edge is no longer centered front-to-back. Instead, it appears shifted closer to the rear of the device, which is likely to accommodate display components within the enclosure. There are other signs of Apple's re-engineering efforts. The speaker grilles, for example, show a pared-back design, with only two holes on either side of the port compared to the typical five. That reduction reflects the same space-saving measures required to fit in a battery, processor, display components, and speakers within a much slimmer frame.
