Naked Raygun's “This Place Used to Be a Strip Joint” and Eleventh Dream Day's “By the Time They Got to Lounge Ax.” We rolled through a panel discussion with Aadam and Janet Bean/Rick Rizzo of EDD and Jeff Pezzati/Eric Spicer of NR, then Rick and Janet regaled us with a rare acoustic set.

_**Moe Tucker**_ _**/**__**Half Japanese**_ _**- Cabaret Metro, Chicago Illinois, May 5, 1989**_ We’re going to hang out in Chicago with taper extraordinaire Aadam Jacobs for a little while longer this week. Just about 10 years before that Jim O'Rourke gig, Aadam and his rig were at the Cabaret Metro recording the radical double bill Half Japanese and Moe Tucker. David Fair, who co-founded Half Japanese with brother Jad, recently passed away, so listen in as a belated tribute. The Moe Japanese pairing was a full collaboration, with the erstwhile Velvet Underground drummer joining the Fair bros for most of their set and vice versa. It’s a great team-up; amongst the countless VU-inspired groups of their day, Half Japanese was one of the few bands who really got the minimalist/amateurist Velvet thing, the primitive rhythmic thump, the furiously strummed guitars, the wild abandon. What fun! Towards the end, the ensemble tears into an amazing rendition of “Hey Mr. Rain” that must’ve conjured up a torrential downpour in the Windy City. Won’t you follow me down …? **_David Says:_** Music comes all kinds of ways. Don’t say someone’s music is bad. Say you can’t understand it, or it doesn’t speak to you. And then find some music that does speak to you. Or if you can’t find it, make it.

Jim O'Rourke - Empty Bottle, Chicago, Illinois, August 27, 1999 https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/829825957835784192
_**Jim O'Rourke - Empty Bottle, Chicago, Illinois, August 27, 1999**_ Amidst the heads and young guitar slingers in attendance at that 1996 CBGB John Fahey show we listened to yesterday — none other than Jim O'Rourke! Jim, of course, collaborated with Fahey on _Womblife_ , and would go on to make some excellent Fahey-influenced music all on his own. And speaking of all on his own, a very nice summer of 1999 Aadam Jacobs tape of O'Rourke playing solo acoustic recently made its way onto the Archive. (What a gift the Aadam project continues to be!) Here, Jim performs the then-unreleased, now-classic _Halfway to a Threeway_ EP in unadorned fashion, a rare thing indeed. The first three tunes are delivered as an unbroken suite, and some superfan in the audience requests the title track to close things out. Magnificent. O'Rourke has moved on from this kind of material — I think he’s claimed he hasn’t played guitar in decades — but this era remains captivating. Can’t wipe the smile off my face! It was a very Chicago-in-the-1990s kinda night — also on the bill were Brokeback and the Chicago Underground Trio (featuring Rob Mazurek, Jeff Parker and Noel Kupersmith). Did Aadam tape those sets? You better believe he did. **_Jim Say_**** _s_**** _:_** He was in Chicago one time and he asked me, (_in John Fahey’s voice_) “ _Heeey_ , you got any pot?” And I was like, “No, no I don’t. I’ve never smoked pot.” “Can you get me some pot?” “Oh… okay.” So I called up a guy who I knew who had _at some point_ smoked pot. I never really had those kind of people around me. I asked him, “Hey! Where do you buy pot?” And he was like, “…from a pot dealer.” So I’m asking around on the phone if anyone knows a “pot dealer” and finally I find someone who tells me, “I will sell you some of the pot.” (_laughter_). I’m really scared to do this. I’m terrified. So the person sells me this stuff, and I don’t even wanna touch this, you know? I give it to Fahey and he says thanks. Weeks later, after he’s gone—because we recorded that record at my apartment—I find the bag behind the bed where he was sleeping. He never even opened it (_laughter_). He made me a criminal!
