Kamala Harris's mother is from Thulasendrapuram, India. A small village in Southern India.

Tye Leung Shulze (1887-1972), was the first Chinese Asian American woman to vote in the United States when she cast a ballot in San Francisco on May 19, 1912.

She also became the first Asian woman to pass the civil service examinations and to occupy a government job.

Wong Kim Ark (1873-?), was a Chinese American born in the US.

His case United States v. Wong Kim Ark, set an important precedent to immigration laws as children born to immigrants in the United States can now become citizens.

Steve Chen is a Taiwanese American and is one of the co-founders of YouTube.

In 1982, Steve Chen led the New York Chinatown strike of 1982, one of the largest Asian American worker strikes with about 20,000 garment factory workers.

Banks turned down loans to Asians through the mid 1900’s regardless of employment or income.

Mr. Fung Chow Chan, the owner of Phoenix Bakery, still in business, opened a bank to help his community called the Cathay Bank.

Today, Cathay Bank controls over $19B in assets.

Queen LiliʻUokalani (1838-1917), was the only queen regent and the last sovereign monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, ruling until her overthrow on January 17, 1893. 

She composed, “Aloha ʻOe,” as well as numerous other works.

Hawaiʻi’s Story by Hawaiʻi’s Queen is written by her.

Ioh Ming Pei (1917-2019), was a Chinese American architect. He was born in China and moved to the US in 1935.

Mr. Pei's architectural designs are famous all over the world. He is well known for the glass pyramid at the Grand Louvre in Paris.

Yuri Kochiyama (1921-2014), was a civil rights activist for 50 years, born in San Pedro, California. She was interned at the Jerome War Relocation Center in Arkansas during World War II.

She held Malcolm X as he died on the day he was tragically shot and killed in 1965.

Maya Lin was 21 & a student at Yale when she won the competition for the Vietnam Memorial, honoring the Americans who lost their lives in the war.

Controversial at first, the simple black granite motif, holding all names of those lost, is beautifully set into the Capitol Mall
