It was a real honor to celebrate social worker and suicidologist Jerry Reed at the #AAS19 conference in Denver. I appreciate that Jerry always identifies himself as a social worker. His work makes a difference in the world.

Listening to Chef Merlin Verrier: Highs and lows. I first thought about suicide at age 12. I'm 11 years sober. I cooked for Obama and Oprah. The food industry is competitive. Let's win this one. #AAS19...

Every chef and food writer at today's event mentioned how profound Anthony Bourdain's suicide death was for them and the food industry. It was an aha moment for me. Previously I only thought about how his death affected the fans and viewers. Incredibly powerful event.

Robert Sapolsky: The amygdala is about aggression, but it is also about fear. The amygdala identifies threat in less than 1/10th. It takes the visual cortex 10x as long. Amygdala is fast, but not necessarily accurate. The difference can confuse a cell phone for a gun. #AAS19

At the YouthLine and @TEENLINEONLINE presentation at #AAS19. Love that this presentation has youth presenting about their experiences working on a teenline. Take home message: youth can volunteer on a crisis line and this experience prepares them for life.

Cheryl Eskin: All @TEENLINEONLINE calls are crises. The most common crisis? Relationship. 2. Anxiety/stress. 3. Depression. 4. Suicide. Youth are more likely to talk with youth; they talk to peers. 80% of the 22k youth who reach out found the information online. #aas19

Q: Why does peer-to-peer work? A (Zakia): Adults are great, but if you're talking about your first break up / failing a test, adults respond in hindsight. We (youth) understand in realtime & provide immediate validation. This sets the tone for future help-seeking. #AAS19

TeenTalkApp: Teens thought that the name was great. Adults didn't like the name. We went with the teens' choice. We've had 15,000 downloads this year. The teens were right. https://teenlineonline.org/teentalkapp/ #AAS19

Working at @TEENLINEONLINE has improved my help-seeking behavior.
We have between 4 - 8 volunteers in a big room. The volunteers often have personal experience with a lot of these issues. We've become great friends. We use the peer support model with eachother #AAS19

"Being a @TEENLINEONLINE volunteer has helped me lose the last shreds of stigma around the issues we all face in our lives." "I've been a volunteer for 8 months; it has changed my life. I've questioned biases and assumptions, made friends, and become more open-minded." #AAS19
